Yes. In 2014 Putin had tried to install a puppet in charge of Ukraine named Viktor Yanukovych. When Yanukovych's loyalties were revealed, he fled from Ukraine to Russia.
Putin wants to tell a fairytale about how Yanukovych was legitimate and Zelenskyy overthrew him in a coup. That fairytale will be much easier to tell with Zelenskyy tortured and then killed.

@ElwoodBlues Actually, that is completely backwards. Yanukovych was elected. The US State Department carried out a could and installed a sock puppet and suddenly NATO became top priority out of nowhere.
Zelensky was two leaders after that. Victoria Nuland installed Arseniy Yatsenyuk. You might remember her famous words "fuck the EU".
