I honestly don’t know who said it, if I had to guess I’d say Charlie Kirk.

I’m afraid to say this, but that statement’s actually mostly not wrong. I wouldn’t necessarily say most people disliked MLK while he was alive, but a whole lot of people sure did. And today we’ve turned him into this perfect, flawless, non-controversial, impotent, toothless, meaningless figure. That’s not what he was. He was an imperfect man. He cheated on his wife, and I think he plagiarized some of his papers at Boston University, off the top of my head. Lots of his followers were socialists and plenty of them were even communists. I still think he was an excellent leader and role model, but it’s absolutely okay to criticize him. By treating him like he was perfect we risk forgetting the important, controversial things that he stood for.

@Theyitis I thinks it’s more that people on the left side of things care mostly about his advocacy for the liberation of black people and much less about his infidelity, or alcoholism (I’ve heard both of those for years)

When you bring it up people get very suspicious as to why you’re bringing it up

Because that’s done pretty much exclusively by racists trying to justify their racism without acknowledging their racism

Because most other people are only concerned with his civil rights advocacy

I don’t think you’re reading the situation correctly at all

Nobody is perfect. That is a core liberal (left) belief. We love imperfect people. It’s the conservatives that want American historical figures like MLK to be perfect, non-controversial, and meaningless, that way they can be used as infallible authority figures to keep the poor and middle classes in line.

It is not the same thing at all as to what conservatives are doing

It does happen sometimes, sure

But that has nothing to do with anything related to Kirk and what he said
