I despise Trump more than most, but Colbert’s show was awful.

Endless mediocre Trump jokes every night for most of the monologue. Nothing clever about it. Letterman was my generation, but Johnny was great, and Conan had his absurdist POV. Colbert added nothing.

I never watched Colbert. I did watch the ending with Paul McCartney singing "Hello Goodbye" with the audience coming on stage at the end, that was nice. Apparently there was a big deal about who would be the final Colbert interview, and it turned out to be McCartney, which is appropriate as the man is one of the artistic giants of our era.

Otherwise those late-night shows always bored the shit out of me. I think I watched Johnny Carson once and thought his opening monologue was OK, but I'd rather watch paint dry than listen to a softball interview with some celebrity I couldn't care less about. Never watched Letterman either. I remember watching one Conan show where he ran across the country from New York to LA. Conan O'Brien and Denis Leary are first cousins.

If you like McCartney, the poet Paul Muldoon has a podcast series "McCartney - A Life in Lyrics" where in each episode, he and McCartney discuss a specific song, the circumstances around writing it, and what he meant to express. McCartney comes across as a genuinely decent and sincere person. Highly recommended if you have any interest at all in McCartney, the Beatles, or Wings.

@LeopoldBloom The interviews are horrid. Letterman did something different with them, in part. More so when he was on NBC.

I do love the Beatles. Thanks.

Christopher Hitchens was on Bill Maher years ago and he basically said the same about people making jokes about George W Bush, you should watch it if you haven't.
