whowasthatmaskedman The thing is they do know the world has changed and they don't like the change, so they are hoping against hope that some fat slob with an enlarged self-interest who is promising them to return to things to their romantised past as long as they keep him in the centre of their lives will be their saviour.
An unnecessary and ill-planned (or no-planned) war? No problem. Daily chaos? That's okay. A taxpayer funded gilded ballroom that was supposed to by taxpayer-free? That's fine. Out of reach petrol prices that continue to escalate while being told they are dropping like a rocket? Who cares. Citizens being executed in the street? Just tell them what to think about it.
He is offering them a way to bypass the change that they know about, that they acknowledge, and that they don't want despite it being inevitable. A successful con man doesn't hide reality from his/her shills. He offers them a path to escape it. And no voter is exempt if they fear the change. The dirty little secret (for them) is change always comes anyway. History is chockfull of examples. And it's not pretty.
