I believe that most of those who wave their country's flag, do in fact hate their country. They want to see it destroyed, and replaced by something grandiose and horrible. What they love is not their country; instead, it's the pathetic dream (or rather, nightmare) of that country ..
And I think that's true for many countries, be it the US, or the UK, or France, or (...)

@swirlie A very well written summation of your observations. Thank you for posting this.

@helenS I agree that flag-wavers tend to support an idealised or historical idea of their country, rather than the country as it now is. But that's not the same as hating their country. On the contrary, flag-wavers in the UK, or more specifically England, are inclined to argue that they love their country, but it is in the process of being taken over by people who hate it. One can agree or disagree with that, of course, but I don't see anything "pathetic" in that attitude.

My village has several Union flags. Unfortunately two of them are upside down. The sign of distress was not intentional, I think !

@emmasfriend

You have to look carefully to realize that a Union Jack is upside-down.

@helenS actually many of us dream of real ways to make life magnificent again...anywhere we can!!

@helenS A very good point, though I think what they love is their own twisted version of it. And themselves, of course.

@Ohplease47 Life hasn't been more "magnificent" in the past, and I'm sure you know it. Would you really want to be a coal miner's or an industrial worker's wife in 1910?

@helenS life can be better than just ok with fascist monsters off our back, many people even on SW wax eloquent about the little plot of heaven in their lives and elsewhere. Lets be positive now, ok???
