The baseline concept is that in The Hunger Games, a post-apocalyptic America chooses one boy and one girl from each of the 13 districts that now exist. The children/teens compete in a televised deathmatch where they must kill each other or battle vicious arena hazards until only one remains. That survivor wins food and supplies for their (sometimes impoverished and starving) district, although ones like Districts 1 and 2 are lush regions of luxury, and often send in strong “ringers” to win.
Well, here it’s not a lottery, nor a deathmatch (well, hopefully not), but the idea of pulling a high school boy and girl (presumably minors) from each state to compete is certainly reminiscent of the idea, as many on the internet have noted.
