We did a study years ago when Congress discussed cutting funding for hurricane hunting aircraft. We were able to prove that the lack of data from those flights would result in potential costs far exceeding the cost of the aircraft operations. Lack of data means a wider "hurricane warning" zone, resulting in petrochemical plant shutdowns/restarts and other costly measures. I wonder what the implications of this satellite data loss might be.

@exexec Yes. When I was stationed at Keesler AFB where the Hurricane Hunters operated from I met many of their pilots, aircrews, maintainers, ground crew, etc.
Remember this stupid policy is being authorized by someone who—in his first administration (I reserve my term “misadministration” for his current term because, unknown to him, there were effective people in his first cabinet and staff that averted much of his damage & danger)—wanted to nuke hurricanes. It doesn’t get much more deranged than that!
