A Trump supporter on another post here on SW a couple months ago said, “Democrats sure like to hurt rural people. Trump is hurting everyone equally.”
They think the “smug coastal liberal elites” have been hurting them, so they don’t care what terrible things he does as long as he’s hurting the people they hate.
Of course it also helps that so many people have decided that Fox News is central to their identity, and Fox News makes money by causing people to fear and hate anyone who’s not a white rural Christian.
There are a number of other factors you could write a good book about, but I feel like those are the most important points.
