The question is will Russia give back the land its taken, I forsee a long draw out battle of words rather tha a negotiation on this one. Only Putin getting what he wants or some taking over who's prepared to settle for benefits in return to ceding back most of the Dombass will end this. I dont see a new Ukranian regime taking any other stance than that. So another Palestine, Trumps good at Pelatine situations, takes the side of the bully and kicks in hard. That's probably why hes tried to allign with Putin. Problem is Putin wont even cede anything to him. Tragedies that are black comedies that are the end of the worlod as we know it anytime soon now. @newjaninev2 Not sure about that. It was part of his excuse anyway. Clearly Ukraine had and has wealth producing resource and people and Russia is a place fairly devoid of people for its size. Joining NATO would have directed that resource in people and wealth creation more positively toward Europe anyway, but Russia has always been a paranoid place and when Russia initially offered to join NATO and make it in effect an anti islamic terrorist alliance it was refused. Si what else does NATO stand for oy=ther than an anti Russian alliance ? Not making an excuse for him, just stating that we the west kept the cold war going by inviting in everyone except Russia - other states stayed out because they did want to take a side and could see the dangers of division. I think history will ask the questiuon whether more could not have been done to be included into the western world before the divisions started over Russian naval access to the Black Sea which led to the 2014 Crimea annexation. When trade stops crossing borders, armies start crossing borders. Thats why Trumps trade war on all of us is such a bad idea. JMHO.

@Slicker24 Well yes, last time a good number of nukes and other things went missing. I think we can only hope for a peaceful transfer of power, but the Putin has done a bit of a Stalin really. Who is his heir apparent ? All a truly horrible mess.

@kittee It looked very much to me like Trump was hoping to do a deal with Russia and take over Greenland. There's something valuable in the artic and the thawing ice cap and northwest passge may have something to do with this, but I dont think we know enough yet to figure out what's going on.

@Captain countries are never invited to join NATO - they are required to apply, and to then follow a prescribed process.
Following the collapse of the (unlamented) Soviet Union, russia chose not to apply, insisting that it should be formally invited to join... Another example of russia feeling that the rules of international relationships don't apply to them.
