As far as I know, any living species evolves in order to survive so virus in its present version has to be more lethal than the past version.

I see what the problem is: you don't really know much. Viruses try to co-exist with the host, and kill them, but in their initial phase, they could be lethal, as they have not figured out how to not kill the host.
As predicted, later variations of the virus proved to be less fatal.

No, it's NOT like the flu. The comparison to the flu made by the CDC, is NOT about the biology of the virus, but to the CYCLE, as in a vastly less lethal virus, will now have a cycle, where people get infected seasonally and the virus will adjust to survive as well.
