My childhood was somewhat traumatic, so I've always struggled socially. I'm estranged from my family and I don't have any close friends. It's a lonely life.

As as result, I haven't actually celebrated a birthday since I was 11 years old. It's a pill that's always been especially hard to swallow, because your birthday is the one day when people try to make you feel special, but no one ever did that for me. It makes you feel pretty insignificant.

One of my online friends here actually took the time to call me on my birthday one year and even sent me a birthday card through the mail. Stayed up the whole night talking and it was nice to not feel so alone for once. It's the nicest thing anyone's ever done for me, so I will always remember her for that.

@TinyViolins So sorry for your pain. So glad you have a golden memory!

@TinyViolins glad they did that for you. I've hated my birthdays as well. Never felt special. One year I was around 8 tears old. I invited kids to my birthday party and nobody showed up. My mom had to go to their homes, pick them up, and bring them to the party. Happened again at 16, so I've hated my birthday for a long time. Never felt special.

@iamnikki It's such a gut-punch to realize that you don't really matter to anyone. That people you are friendly with just don't care that much about you. I've tried to find ways to enjoy myself without people, but it's a struggle. We're social creatures that need somewhere to belong. It's emotionally challenging to always feel left out

@TinyViolins exactly. And i hate when people say, "just go do things by yourself ". I'm honestly tired of that. I want to make memories with other people, because no one cares to here about one's solo travels.
My emotions are a daily battle for me
