What is happiness?

Happiness is not a state of mind.
It’s not a place what you reach and stays there.
You have happy moments. That’s all you can have. Happy moments or unhappy moments.
You have feelings.
They all start like small emotions. And these emotions running through your mind several times a minute.
You focus on some of them. And as you focus, you nurture them. They become feelings. Then the feelings distract your focus.
I do an exercise with my children every night after bedtime story.
I ask them to remember and tell me 3 happy moments they had that day.
They call it “The News”. And they know why I ask them. Because everyone tends to remember the bad things for longer and forget the good things fast.
I started this practice with them but they teach me a lot about life.
They taught me how to see. The happy moments.
Because that’s all we have.
Happiness is focus.

Hm. Think I see it differently. There’s this scene in A Christmas Carol (the George C Scott one I like) where Bob’s son has died and he’s grieving hard but says he’s a truly happy man. I see it kind of like that. Maybe not a state of mind exactly, but the idea that there’s a big ol pond and then the ripples in the pond. We can be basically happy even while we’re momentarily unhappy. Zillion ways of seeing it I spose and it’s interesting to ponder. I love “The News.” That’s awesome. 😄
