I Put Other People's Happiness Before My Own

My life did this
My heart and soul
Sacrificed in bliss
To hearts missing gold

I coughed and spluttered
And withered away;
As life's lake me choked
Inwards to play

My play was distasteful
To soften the pain
Addiction came swiftly
To whisk me away

Some kind hearts they dragged me
Up onto the sands
Of lost treasure islands
Where honesty stands

I lay there just shaking
My life strewn in tatters
My work life was owned
Things created didn't matter

To paradise, then,
With partner so stubborn
She fought tooth and nail
Steel vs Iron

We shattered each other
Piece by unglorious piece
Until we both realised
Life's better in peace

And so we moved onwards
Together and apart
New jobs in new places
We fell in our hearts

Our jobs took us nowhere
No residence no gains
For family creation
We must take the reins

But what am I good for?
Listening and advice
Ideas and strategies
My penniless vice

What good can I offer
This collapsing world order?
Politician; gardener;
Designer or counsellor?

I have few credentials
Not engineer not gardening;
Not counsellor nor politics -
No money to begin

So where do I turn now
This world looks so bleak
I've fought to bring me back -
But to what I can't speak
