Tax Panic - Letter from hell.

If you use TurboTax and allow it to import your income information or use a form photo double check every number before you file and don't assume it transferred the numbers correctly.

I'm on Social Security and a small untaxable pension. Today I received a CP11 notice from the IRS which stated I owed over 22k for the 2024 season. WTH? The form only told me what was calculated that I owed not what figures used.

I pulled up the PDF of my tax filing and the figure in my SocSec income box made me say "Holy Sh-t". I won't give the # but it was over 1/4 of a million $. Looking at my physical SS statement it appears TurboTax can studder and had entered three 4s where there should have been 2. Results? A 6 figure SS income. Everyone knows that's impossible. Even the IRS computers you would think would notice this.

I immediately opened TurboTax forced the correction and submitted the amended form.

I than spent over one and half hours on hold getting an IRS person to talk to. It's a requirement when receiving such notice.
I explained the mistake and we actually both had a laugh. Once I made the statement the amendment was filed already the matter was resolved thank goodness.

And yes folks I'm one of those who files using TurboTax free and was able to amend re-efile free. But check those numbers yourself before filing. It could reduce the chances of a heart attack.

NO IT'S A MISTAKE AND A WASH.
TELL ME IT'S FIXED AND COOL SOON.

@BizSuitStacy Heart palpitations needless to say.
@Gibbon I can imagine. IRS notifications are unnerving. Sounds like you got it resolved, though.

@BizSuitStacy Yes. The king of procrastinaters had required paperwork, PDF, and TurboTax online found the problem and submitted the amended tax form in 10 minutes. Then spent the expected time on hold for the mandatory phone call and shared the story.

I use intuit profile

@Jenny1234 My taxes are so simple since I retired. Technically I don't need to file anymore because it's a wash. I owe nothing and I get no return.

i would have had a heart attack!

@valentinesdaywife Believe me I was panicked until I discovered what caused it. It just proves IRS computer systems seriously need updating.
There's a limit on what anyone can have as a Social Security benefit and the figure in that line was pushing 10 fold that number. You would think the tax form would have been rejected not recalculated for tax due.

I don’t use that. I use freetaxusa, been doing so for the last 2 years and I haven’t had a problem yet.
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@Moneyonmymind I've been using TT since it came out and never had an issue until this. I'm still trying to figure out how it happened. But it tells us all the IRS doesn't check our statements against what we submit. They are obviously in the dinosaur age of computing.

@Gibbon try freetaxusa if you have any more problems I’m telling you you won’t regret it
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@Moneyonmymind The thing is technically I don't have to file taxes as far as I understand. The only reason I do is if stimulus checks are issued again. They were direct deposit. Those that hadn't filed had difficulty collecting.
