It's not a controversial view among people studying social sciences. There's a good chunk of research backing this up.
The problem I run into is how theses studies established criteria for what makes someone pretty or not, since there doesn't seem to be a consistent benchmark and the variables tend to be different from one study to the next.
In any case, I'm sorry you've had to struggle through life simply because the world we live in is shallow and petty. If it brings you any solace, there are far more people than you realize out there willing to look past your looks and be with you for the right reasons. There are a lot of guys out there struggling with their image as well, and it figures that they could really relate to you and hold similar values
