Blame it on California klan activity tbfh. 🙄
The reason is hiking is for middle class+ people.

http://www.pamallison.com/2012/08/18/hiking/ if you look at the demographic information and look up the groups of people mentioned who hiked more often you'll notice something about both their education and median income.
Your could then look at median incomes and higher education by race and draw the obvious conclusions. tbfh

Is really a high income a must for hiking?
GodQueenSona · F
It's not a must it's a catalyst. The lower your income median the more hours you're likely to work a week and kids your likely to have. You're more likely to be exhausted. And if you work involves anything outside are you going to use time to rest wandering the wilderness? Add to that If you live in the city you may not even know where to even go to start hiking, or no anyone who does. Add to that you might not see any health benefits to going out wandering around(it's no secret that poorer people have higher obesity rates). I could go on but I have shit to do tbfh. There's probably a hundred different small things that you're less likely to do or know about, when you lack income and education that can effect weather or not you do an activity. It's obvious to me, and the data is there. One just must be able to consider what a person's life looks like on a day by day basis based on that data.

@OverdramaticSona: What you say has a point, but in my opinion social-economical circumstances are usually over-rated (not when the involve basic needs as food, housing, clothing...of course), and use as a way to justify personal attitudes.
GodQueenSona · F
Overrated in what way? I have been around people in various socio-economic groups and backgrounds they all think completely differently. They value time completely differently. It's fairly predictable on average, as most people are sheep. But even overlooking those "opinions", denying the numbers is ludicrous. Unless you're saying there's no reason for this at all. And if there was no reason we'd see trend where most hikers are lower income since they make up the most of population, and if that was the case we'd see a greater racial diversity.
Things like like basic needs become more of a day by day struggle the lower on the ladder you go. Where the additude is "you live in the now and tomorrow will have to take care of itself", that's not opinion there are numerous studies. Who tf has time to hike if they might turn off your lights?
I'm not even going to touch on what the article mentions, outside of saying from personal experience it's not that far off base as distasteful as that sounds.

@OverdramaticSona: What a person does and thinks depends on several factors: genetics, the cultural environment he grew up and lives in, and his social-economical status. All of them play a role, but I see it is more politically correct to downplay the role of the first former ones (especially genetics), and focus on the latter one.
GodQueenSona · F
You must down play genetics because no one can accurately determine all of the roles they play. It's an unknown that can only be accounted for by assuming it's overall effect is not relevant, regardless of how true that is.
Political correctness is useless when it comes to these things. Numbers must be above feelings when finding a statistic.
None of that explains the "overratedness" of socio-economic status. It goes hand in hand with cultural environment, since even within what would be the same culture it's powerful dividing line.

@OverdramaticSona: I am not going to downplay genetics, since it has already been really downplayed in the last decades. The reason why their importance has not been accurately determined as it should is the lack of serios researches about it for fear of being considered racist, sexist or any -ist.
GodQueenSona · F
That's not at all why, there's tons of serious research (hello crispr-cas9?). Genes are extremely complex. For every attribute there are multiple genes that play a role and sometimes that's not always clear, and some have more than one role. It's not at all easy to figure that out to a T.
You can't not downplay it the information is not at available at a level thay it would be remotely useful here. If you're going to say that there's a significant based difference in hiking based on genes I'll say the information doesn't exist to deny that.
You're still dodging my question.
Lack of serious research don't make me laugh, that's a terrible lie.

@OverdramaticSona: In this particular case of trekking, I think it has to do more with culture with genes.
In these times where equality is the absolute dogma, researches that prove that humans are different since inception are not well seen. Even worse if gender or race are involved.
It is always easier to blame external factors for our behaviour. They can be much more easily modified than genetics or culture and therefore people are easier targets for manipulation.
The eternal nature/ nurture question again.

Culture is an external factor it's nurture not nature. It's heavily influenced by socio-economic status. They're is no one born with a culture that just isn't a thing. You grow up at people around you influence and teach you. Saying money is irrelevant to that is rediculous. It can't be manipulated any more than other data.
Every geneticist on the planet will say that humans are fundamentally different. We're already classified into 3 major human families that has to do with race.Theres different health disorders certain races are more likely to get on a genetic level. That's not something people shun. Every genetic study I've seen seperates men from women, because where not even sure of all of the different roles sex hormones play in things. We're completely different. Equality has nothing to do with making everything a mixed bland bag of it's all the same. It's about saying "yah people are fucking completely different, but that doesn't give you the right to be a prick".
Once again, there's no data proving the role of genes here. And won't be for a while, it's not useful to consider it here. Arguing that it's more of a cultural thing is along the lines of the article you linked. Because she's talking about fear passed down by word of mouth to younger generations about what can happen to you. Yet you denounced that article already. What is this mythological culture that you speak of that's neither external nor is it at all related to money. It's something magical we're born with how spooky 🙄. This is rediculous honestly.

@Cierzo: Yes. Poor people call "hiking" being homeless. But there's a larger black middle class than anyone ever acknowledges. There always has been.
