I Am Going to Say Something Controversial

D. Trump offers those who feel they have been ignored and socially mistreated a way to strike back without risking anything. They hide behind a loudmouth who has given them the illusion he represents them. He offers simple solution-solution sounding easy-to-remember words and catch-phrases that (some) people find comforting (build a wall, wipe out ISIS, make things better, win, etc.). There's a reason why the polls suggest that those with less education seem obsessively drawn to him. Let's face it, all of the candidates left standing and the parties they represent have serious flaws (more so than candidates from prior election cycles). But, in addition to representing the (new) Republican party also represents the very worst in each of us.

Anyone who jumps to so many generalized conclusions is not "really" intelligent. The thing is, Trump isn't being criticized for being a racist because he doesn't want terrorists to enter the country. No one is actually advocating to bring in terrorists. NO ONE. He is being called out for being racist because he wants to "paint" an entire group of people with a stereotype and apply that stereotype as an easy and formulaic way to create the illusion he (and he alone) is solving a problem. Like anyone with intelligence knows, to solve a problem, you need to start by identifying the root cause problem. And, the root cause problem is not and has never been ALL Muslims. And, attempting to ban all of them or backtracking and banning all people from "troubled regions" is only intended to appeal to the uneducated and unintelligent willing to take the bait. Consider yourself being reeled in...
