I don't play those games but it's such a brilliant sci fi universe.
Sadly most of the writers for the Black Library are crap. Dan Abnett is really good though.

Abnett is different because he was a pro writer before he started in the Warhammer Universe.
Gaunt's Ghosts is brilliant military sci fi. It's about an eccentric imperial guard regiment. It's also heavily realistic in that it's influenced by accounts of experiences soldiers had in WW1 and WW2. You really end up caring about the characters.
Also Abnett's his Horus Heresy books are good.

@Burnley123 true. Never read Gaunts Ghosts but it along with Eisenhorn seem to be the top rated novel series for BL along with Heresy (or at least I'm guessing that's why there are 50+ of them). Only ever read one Heresy novel and found it really dry and uninteresting, but that might just be Garro.
