Why Do Republicans Oppose Gun Control?

From a May 26, 2022 New York Times article titled:
"Why Republicans Won't Budge on Guns"

"Polls show that an overwhelming majority of Americans support some restrictions on firearms, but GOP lawmakers fear they would pay a steep political price for embracing them.

Asked what the reaction would be from voters back home if he were to support any significant form of gun control, Republican Senator Kevin Cramer (R-SD) had a straightforward answer: 'Most would probably throw me out of office,' he said.

His response helps explain why Republicans have resisted proposals such as the one for universal background checks for gun buyers, despite remarkably broad support from the public for such plans -- support that can reach up to 90 percent nationwide in some cases."

That sweet sweet NRA money.

@BohemianBoo You nailed it. Campaign finance reform laws are urgently needed to prevent corporations, such as gun manufacturers, from buying our representatives.

@BohemianBoo The NRA went bankrupt not too long ago, they don’t have a lot of money. These legislators are at least doing what they think their constituents want. The great strength of the NRA is not so much its war chest as its mailing list.

I think those who wanna keep their loose gun laws resonate like this:

No one trust the police and their police brutality or corruption, no one who isn't first class citizen affords the health care bills or fees to go to court.

The firearm in their hands is the only power they have. Nothing in US protects the powerless unless they themselves do.

If you lived anywhere you’re likely to be beaten or killed by the police as easily as you might be detained - say like America - I imagine having a personal weapon would become very important. @Queendragonfly

@Graylight Exactly. Especially if you are black. Or a woman. Then it's automatically a significant bigger risk of being in danger.

Read the constitution sometime.

@Drummer yes but did you understand it

@Drummer because I'm right

Because they think they will need their guns against the government.

@Steve42 Pew! Pew!
JPWhoo · 36-40, MVIP
That doesn’t make sense though. If 90% are in favor of it, then why would “most” voters back home want to throw him out of office? “Most” could only be about 10% and that’s not enough to lose an election.
Drummer · M
@robb65 I don't understand your question.
robb65 · 56-60, M
@Drummer In other words there are lots of people who are not necessarily opposed to background checks but who are at the same time opposed to "universal" background checks. We could have one without the other but some of the same people wanting "universal" background checks are opposed to allowing individuals to run background checks. So my take is 1) two different things are most likely being conflated. 2) many of the people you claim are in favor of universal background checks either aren't really or they don't understand the difference, and 3) if the people pushing the issue were simply wanting background checks on private sales then a compromise could possibly be reached but what they really want is to either eliminate private sales or unnecessarily complicate the process.
Drummer · M
@robb65 "many of the people YOU CLAIM are in favor of background checks"??
No! This is not "my claim"...It's a fact!
Google: "Seventy to 80 percent of NRA members support a universal background check." (Politifact)
(I'm through arguing with you)
Graylight · 51-55, F
You misinterpret. Yes, the majority of Americans do favor some form of gun control and those voters live in Republican and Democratic states. The GOP isn’t saying their Republican constituents favor gun control; they implied most citizens favor gun control. Pew will offer extraordinarily different data on this issue, as will most agencies.

And no one opposes gun control at this point in the game in the US. You favor sanity or you support the right to satisfy your own whims at the expense of others lives, happiness and wellbeing.

@Graylight "I am aware that there is absolutely absolutely no way, using legitimate information and research to support your side."?????

@Drummer Go ahead then, waste our time by hauling out whatever statistics you have that prove having guns is safer than not having them. Your contention, your burden of proof.

Perhaps you'd like to learn the art of debate.
Drummer · M
@Graylight Perhaps you'd like to go back and read all my comments, and, while you're at it, read the rest of the article I posted. "Why do Republicans oppose gun control?"..
Would a pro-gun person post such an anti-gun article?
I am firmly supportive of gun regulation, and a new Assault Weapons Ban is necessary, imo.
