Vin, I want to start by saying that I support the ban of extended magazines and other forms of common sense gun control. That being said, you're making inaccurate statements.
I'm a gun owner. I own a 30.06 hunting rifle. Just like an AR-15, it's semi-automatic. It's more accurate than an AR-15 at long range. I could buy an extended magazine for it. I don't own those because I carry it when I'm hunting. Bullets are heavy. My clip is a hunter's clip with only five rounds. It's very rare that I fire a second shot, so I don't need to have 15 or more rounds ready to go.
Should be hunting rifle be considered an assault rifle as part of your post. No one would look at it as such. It looks like a hunting rifle. But with bigger clips, it could have done this too.

I want to add that this was not a 'sniper' situation. He had a crowd of thousands watching a concert. He wasn't picking out targets. He just shot into the crowd and hit who he hit. Fish in a barrel or broad side of a barn would be better analogies.

@RosaMarie but an ar-15 looks cooler. Carry a regular rifle and folks will mistake you for a deer hunter.

@Vin53 In "service rifle match" competition, M1 Garand rifles are commonly used in 30/06 . M1A rifles, which are the civilian version of the M14 are used in .308 caliber also known as 7.62 in military terminology. They all fire just as rapidly as one another, and despite the Garand having an eight round clip, It can be reloaded within 3 seconds even by a novice shooter.
