Update: 14 students and a teacher killed in Texas school shooting

Fourteen students and a teacher are dead after a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, according to Gov. Greg Abbott. The 18-year-old suspect, a student at Uvalde High School, is also dead, he said.

The suspect also allegedly shot his grandmother before entering the school and again opening fire, Abbott said. He did not say anything further about her condition. Abbott said the shooter had a handgun and also possibly a rifle.

@Vin53 School premises are firearm free zones. Stricter gun laws only apply to law abiding citizens, not to people intent on doing harm.

When you were taking your buggy to school as a kid did you have to worry about being gunned down there?
All children and their parents have to worry about it in todays America.

Nope. A lot changed since I went to school.

We went to smaller neighborhood schools where everyone knew one another, so everyone was familiar with who the "keep your eyes on them" people were. The police came by about once a year to warn us about illegal drugs, but that was it. The fire department also came by once a year to make sure we know something about fire safety. A few older kids took guns to school, also fishing rods, so they could go hunting or fishing right after school.

In my 12 years from 1st to 12th grades there were no shootings. Nor any school nearby. I might add that probably less than 1% of the students dropped out and a quick mental estimate is that 30 to 40% went on to college, and graduated from there.

Now there are elementary schools bigger than my entire home town. And what school issues that make the news are about squabbles between parents and teachers, or squabbles between the teachers' union and the school board. There were also a few shootingsand a few gang related issues. Makes me wonder if schools are now one of those hostile work environments. Also, the drop out rate is about 30%.

Going back to my school days again. We didn't use a buggy to get to school. Also, we didn't use an automobile. We walked to school. In the less is more category, I think those days were better than these days are for school children.

Further proof that today's America is neither mature or responsible enough to have the access to modern guns.

@Vin53 Todays schools are too big and too out of control to enforce gun restriction rules if they did exist. Go to your nearest high school at quiting time to see how many kids with cars exiting the parking lot are doing so within the legal speed limit.
