I Believe In The Right To Own A Gun

[big]...BUT let's acknowledge we live in a society of many, not one
[/big]
For those who have the need to continue romanticizing (and fictionalizing) the past, let's talk about "your" rights. You, along with the rest of us, have a right to own a gun, but not to do with whatever we please whenever we please. And, that right under the full enforcement of the 2nd Amendment does not apply to every type of gun or extend to every type of weapon never imagined when the original right was bestowed to you, and the rest of us.

No one is trying to take away "your" precious guns, or the guns from anyone else. Despite the talking points that riled up many gun owners in the past, Obama was not trying to take away your guns, Hillary Clinton wasn't, nor anyone else. Military exercises in Texas during the Obama Administration that extremist gun owners sounded the alarm about as a ploy to declare martial law and suspend the 2nd Amendment NEVER took place. In the 21st century (or any century, for that matter) there is no reason, rationale, or right for a citizen to own a military grade gun designed exclusively to kill massive amounts of humans. You don't need such a weapon for safety, security, or hunting. In fact, if you are using such a gun or think you might need such a gun for hunting like the one used in the latest school shooting, you know nothing about the sport of hunting and should be banned from it - for life.

Instead of relying on talking points you get from the gun manufacturing trade association, also known as the NRA, start thinking for yourselves. Hopefully, when you were a kid you were taught how to do that. Go back and review that lesson. As a reminder, it's called, "thinking for yourself."

Saying we can't control everything as a way to justify, "let's not do anything" has sadly been an effective talking point... up to now. That is going to change. You will still have guns, but we will have stronger gun control regulations. It won't stop every instance of gun abuse, but it will stop some. It won't eliminate crazy people from our society, but it will deter some of them from getting guns in the first place and reduce the number who have access to military style weapons. And guess what, only a single success IS a success.

If you don't know better than reciting NRA talking points, you should stop and think (for yourself). Yes, it takes effort, but there is a reward for it. You will feel better about yourself as you continue to use your guns in ways the Constitution guarantees. And, it will act as a deterrent in case you or anyone of the rest of us thinks about using guns for ways the Constitution or its signers never intended for them to be used. And, for goodness sakes, acknowledge a solution does not have to "control everything" for it to be effective.

Obviously you know less about guns than you assert. Some hand guns operate exactly the same as the "assault" weapon the shooter used to slaughter those 17 people. It's only called an assault weapon because it looks serious but it operates exactly the same as many hand guns no one is posturing about. Learn about the issue before you start telling everyone else what you want them to have or to do. And realize that you don't get to make the laws any more than anyone else.

@katielass In your haste to justify your shrine to guns, I believe you are missing the main and substantive point. Any form of sensible gun control is a step, at last, in the right direction.

I am not trying to tell anyone who is responsible what to do... in their own life and as it concerns their own life, I don't want to tell anyone what to do in that regard and I am not advocating anyone give up their right to own and be responsible with their guns. At the same time, I don't want someone with ill intentions or clouded judgment to use guns the way we, as a society have become conditioned by "gun enshriners" to think is just the way things have to be or was ever intended to be.

We may need to help you come along kicking and screaming the way some people were forced to accept computers, the Internet, microwave cooking, and cellphones, but sensible gun control laws will be implemented. And, to be brutally honest with you, that is going to happen a lot sooner than you think. And, yes Katie, you will still be able to use and enjoy your guns and keep your shrine to them... just not military style weapons. Welcome to just a little bit safer and just a little bit saner world.

@MarkPaul I based my judgment on your own words. For example:

You don't need such a weapon for safety, security, or hunting. In fact, if you are using such a gun or think you might need such a gun for hunting like the one used in the latest school shooting, you know nothing about the sport of hunting and should be banned from it - for life.

Now that I've made my point, assuming you're intelligent enough to comprehend it, I'll clue you in on a few things. It's not up to you to decide who needs what and for what purpose. The SC has and will continue to make that decision. Further, "my side" has never been about doing nothing. "My side" has offered up many suggestions to prevent incidents like this and guess who has dismissed them out of turn every time. "NOY my side" that's who.

So don't you sit there and think you have some words of wisdom for "my side" because you don't. And your effort to appear oh so congenial didn't pass the laugh test. I suggest you expand your thinking and start questioning why the dems squandered 2009 and 2010. No can't blame repubs. The dems changed the rules so they could shove through an unpopular healthcare takeover and if they had wanted to they could have addressed the gun issue they blather about only in election years as well as the immigration issue. They don't want those issues fixed because once those issues are taken care of they will have to create another campaign issue as they have nothing else to offer.

Your love of "sides" seems equal to your love of guns which, no doubt coincides with your love of the savior you see in donald trump (before he was against sensible gun control, I mean... you know when he professed to be a Democrat - and not that long ago, so spare me the Ronald Reagan Democrat-to-Republican comparison).

You have yet to make a point, let alone "your" point. "Your side" which clearly (now) turns out to be the NRA has come up - and is coming up now through your notorious spokespeople like Newt Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh, and other self-serving robots, that the solution is to arm schools as though they are active military zones. With all due respect... are you nuts? We do not need weapons to achieve a safe environment for learning. In case you grew up in Syria or Afghanistan, in American society we are able to and should take advantage of the civilized society we have available to us. There is nothing noble about the militaristic view of the world you hold up. So, yes... that nonsensical idea is rejected.

The idea that you are entitled to your little hobby without regard to the rest of society, with no restrictions, controls, or limits raises the idea of a bunch of entitled cry-babies to a whole new and disturbing level.

How about you save your fake-pride for "your side" for your reality TV show watching and get off your fat ass and help address the problem with a real solution. And, the last time Americans were surveyed, the popularity of the Affordable Care Act with all of its flaws was exceptionally higher than the incompetent performance of the people who are now (thankfully) on the way out of power (including trump and his swamp-infested, corrupt gang of idiots).

Of course it is up to you, but you really should try thinking for yourself instead of reciting talking points that even Sarah Huckabee Sanders can't defend even with her enthusiasm for lying.

I saw what you were even though you tried to hide it and now just as I knew you would you couldn't resist exposing your true self. Do not speak to me again, I only deal with honest people unless I'm in the mood to ream some left wing idiot a new one and today is not that day. Lucky you.

@katielass You have no idea what you are talking about. You are so brainwashed by "your side" you can't even see straight, let alone shoot straight. Do you even have any thoughts and ideas of your own?

I have not hidden myself and what possible reason would there be to do so? Your inability to be honest with yourself is the give-away that you are a fraud. Spend your days in your bunker with your guns and your homemade tinfoil hat and see what that accomplishes. I now know what your intentions are. And, I will keep that in mind as I work for sensible gun control laws that includes taking away the social use of military armaments in our civil society. Good day, Madam!
