I Do Not Support Gun Control

I consider myself a left-leaning moderate but my opposition to gun control is probably the most conservative view I have. Even though I don't like guns, I support people's rights to own them and don't believe gun control laws have ever really worked.

They generally work very well in many modern western countries
Ellen · 46-50, F
@Dlrannie But not in the US.

S@Ellen That's true but I suspect that's due to the fact controls have not covered the country uniformly

@Dlrannie yes worked well in many other western countries where guns weren't already on the streets.

It would be impossible to take guns away from all owners of guns in this county.
Ellen · 46-50, F
@Dlrannie Maybe. But it's also just a completely different culture.

[@KaysHealingPath Guns were accessible in most western countries and indeed still are but licence requirements are stringent hand guns, pump action shot guns, assault rifles and the likes of machine guns are not permitted

@Ellen That's certainly true - as far as guns are concerned America appears to be stuck back in the old days of the frontier
Ellen · 46-50, F
@Dlrannie OK. Well most of America is still the "frontier." There's lots of it between NY and LA.

@Ellen I appreciate that America is a large country but I've not heard of Indians on the warpath, range wars or shootouts at the OK Corral in recent times.

@Dlrannie Cute. But most of America is still wilderness, particularly out west. For example, go 30 miles or so outside Phoenix and you're in the middle of nowhere. People have guns for protection. And whether they actually ever need them or not, they provide a level of comfort.
