How come the republican supporters are not upset about the new tariff war?

That is something that will cost us ALL if tariffs actually go through.

Even if it does bring jobs back to America, do you really relish the thought of paying even more for things that are overpriced?

Some think, "At first it may cost more but prices will eventually come down". Didn't trump himself say something about once prices go up, it is really hard to bring them down?

I am just trying to understand why some members of the Right would cheer on someone who is doing things that will hit their wallets even harder.

I had to read up on exactly why the tariffs were imposed.

I guess the crack down on illegal immigrants and drugs are supposed to counter act the effects of these tariffs. Could be their reasoning

I don't really know about economics...

I don't really know about economics..

Most of Trump's administration and supporters don't either. It is a combination of lack of understanding and non-apologetic apathy towards politics and economics that got us here.

@dancingtongue it's a good thing I'm not the one making these decisions then

@dancingtongue Interesting point of view since we had the best economy in years during his 1st term then Biden tour everything to hell. You better punt.

Trump became president at the peak of the longest economic expansion streak in U.S. history, which began in June 2009 and lasted over ten years. As such, the third year of his term witnessed a 50-year low unemployment rate of 3.5% and record-high household income and overall wealth of Americans.

Record lows soon replaced record highs as the world succumbed to the global pandemic. The U.S. unemployment rate went from 3.5% in February 2020 to 14.7% in April 2020, which matched the levels of the Great Depression. Trump signed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES) to tackle the recession, contributing to a $3.1 trillion budget deficit or nearly 14.9% of the annual GDP.

Trump came into office riding the longest growth period in GDP recent history under Obama, never reached the peaks of Obama, and it was crashing due to the pandemic before Biden took over and Biden had it growing again in a little over a year.

@dancingtongue I am no trump fan, but I do not think we can blame him for the employment problems that the pandemic brought.

@Gibbon In case you hadn't noticed, we were discussing the economy and not the election. I happen to agree that Biden should never have run for re-election -- because of age, not track record -- and the resulting change in the midst of the campaign with no open nomination process was a train wreck that no ready candidate was likely to survive.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@Punches Can't blame Trump for the pandemic. But certainly can't give him high marks for handling the response to it, other than expediting the vaccine. The mixed messages and outright nonsense over masking, reasonable precautions, coordination with WHO and other countries cost a lot of lives and allowed COVID to get a firmer footprint requiring more drastic action to overcome.
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@dancingtongue I was specifically talking about the economy and the great screw up Biden was with it.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@Gibbon
To start his second term, President Trump inherited a relatively strong economy. Gross domestic product grew 2.8% in 2024 and unemployment stood at 4% in January 2025. Though annual inflation stood at 3% that January, above the Federal Reserve's target, it had come down from a high of 9% in June 2022. In all, the U.S. had engineered the strongest post-COVID economic recovery among its global peers.."
