If a flat tax were implimented with fewer or no write offs (deductions), maybe the IRS itself isnt even necessary? Id love to see Trump and all the ultrawealthy pay a flat tax they cannot weasel their way out of. America has bills to pay; billionares not paying their fairshare is simply not paying the bills.

@jehova Americans clearly voted for the two parties who are in power, obviously they do not support taxes. Obviously they're interested in defunding the nation.

@jehova many conservatives have proposed a flat income tax. But are you sure you want that? Let's assume a flat tax of 10% of one's income. That's a much greater burden on low income earners than it is on wealthier individuals.
I'm as fiscally conservative as it gets, and even I don't believe a true flat tax is fair.
Just remember, the same politicians in both sides of the aisle calling for tax reform never follow through. Conservatives calling for simplifying the internal revenue code, continue approving complex tax laws. Liberals who keep saying "tax the rich" won't bite the billionaire hands that feed them either.

@Roundandroundwego yet everyone is paying them. If k-12 schooling disappeared or the financial safety nets that have allowed mr. Trump's many bankruptcies. Are we confident that everyone would still want taxes to disappear. Sure the prospect of not paying taxes is great, but when the roads need repair plowing or to be built. Are the citizen and\or business owners going to pay those bills? Is childcare healthcare and schooling suddenly cost free? Do we, as a species revert to aristocracy and k12 tuition for all.

@BizSuitStacy currently its about 30% without write offs. A flat tax is more equitable which is why most of the world uses flat income tax. Often eliminating sales tax entirely. Without sales tax budgetting is far easier.

@jehova the property taxes that fund the public schools are a good example of bad taxes and community that can only fail. That they voted for.
Driving to the school and the car based life really will burn away all the life of the land. That's dysfunctional. Americans definitely voted to continue that.

@Roundandroundwego yes property tax seems inequitable, at best. We could produce gasoline from hemp oil derived from argiculture. That would undue most of the problem created by prohibition; of a plant and fuel prices and everything dependant on transport would plummet.
Roundandroundwego · 61-69
@jehova the aims, wishes and aspirations of Americans don't align with no hemp socialist paradise - harder and harder work, no safety net, traumatized violent ignorant people competing in scarcity. That's what Americans impose, that's where they voted to live forever.

@jehova Let's stick with your original topic before going down other rabbit holes.
You brought up implementing a flat tax. And I said it's actually not fair to low wage earners. A flat tax has a regressive effect, as low wage earners rely on all of their income to survive. It's why we have a progressive tax system designed to take a higher percentage from higher wage earners, leading to a flatter effect.
I believe in simplifying the internal revenue code. It's very complex...even CPAs struggle to keep up.
I never said we don't need taxes. We do. And we have all kinds. Income taxes, excise taxes, capital gains taxes, property taxes, fees, tolls, tariffs, etc.
Is the gov't spending the tax revenue wisely, ethically and legally? Nope. And we're starting to find out just how bad it is.

yet everyone is paying them.
This is mentioned in the context of the IRS, which means federal income taxes. And it's simply not true. More than 40% of wage earners pay no federal income tax. Their FICA deductions are refunded when they file their income tax return. I never said we don't need taxes. We do. And we have all kinds. Income taxes, excise taxes, capital gains taxes, property taxes, fees, tolls, tariffs, etc.

@Roundandroundwego thats not the place america started from. Indeed nearly all of the founding fathers grew hemp. The colonies were intended by Britain to be a penal colony much like australia was later. Hemp is what launched America as an economic powerhouse. If we can return our economy to an agriculturally produced fuel(hemp; thc is a hydrocarbon and was used as light petroleum to make gasoline; until The Marihuana Tax Act of 1938). All else will correct itself quickly.

First time I ever heard that.
Thing is Great Britain wasn't the only European country with colonies in the New World. Spain had colonies (Florida and Louisiana.) I'm thinking France had a couple as well.
Just remember, it was PRESIDENT TRUMP who signed the bill legalizing the production of hemp, in his last administration. And it was Trump who (as a Floridian) voted in favor of recreational marijuana at the last election.

@Reason10 and theyd been on the table held up by the federal legislature for at least 30 years. Marihuana tax act of 1938 fml. Then the dea was established by the controlled substances act. The legislature did not do due diligence. And continue to require nearly being put at gun point to act. Trump did it? Idk he likely helped but said legislation was on pause since the 1980s. He didnt veto what finally got passed?, after that long.

@jehova Trump signed the bill (in his first term) legalizing the growing and production of Hemp.
(This is where it gets a little complicated.) I watched several businesses take advantage of that Trump law to introduce what they refer to as a line cannabinoid projects, stuff made from hemp. CBD oil, to name one. Hell, there are CBD canned drinks here that actually contain THC, and they are legal. (I don't drink them because (a) I'm a substitute teacher for two Florida counties, subject to a pee test, and (b) I'll ingest ANY TCH in my body only at gun point.)
We have medical marijuana. There are medical marijuana clinics all over the place here. Doctors hand out scripts to that stuff like Jehovah's Witnesses hand out THE WATCHTOWER, all over the place.
In the last election, recreational marijuana was on the referendum. (That's an exercise of raw Democracy, getting bills to the public that the legislature won't touch with a ten foot pole.)
Even though I would never touch the stuff, I voted for it, mostly just to fuck up the street marijuana trade. Also helps to have a new source of sales tax revenues, (event though Florida's budget is in surplus.)
Trump is a resident of Florida. He voted for it.
Our conservative Governor (Ron DeSantis, who is arguably the finest governor in the history of this state) voted against it.
The measure didn't pass.
Cannabinoids? Wanna REALLY have some fun with your brain cells and piss off the liquor industry?
One of the after effects of Trump legalizing Hemp was the vast number of Kava bars that sprung up all over the place. They offer natural cannabinoid drinks that likely can pick you up, knock you out or make you feel high as a kite.
One of these items is KRATOM. It is part of the coffee plant. It can either make you very drowsy, make you very hyper or make you feel high. Some say it affects the same part of the brain as Methadone. It is usually taken in tea form.
(I tried it, but threw it up. Apparently I can't hold down any opium products OR products that act like opium. Same thing happened when I took Lortab for a toothache. Got dizzy and then barfed.)
Some of these bars are kinda low key. A lot of them are mid Sixty ish psychedelic joints that have you thinking you've transported back to Woodstock.
I can't speak for the rest of the country. I just know these places are here.
