I have seen them broke physically, financially, and emotionally. Perhaps with a higher rate than most other professions.

Yup. My grandfather retired from his leutenants job in the 1950s. His retirement pay was very thin compared to what he earned while he was on the job.

These days they get a few or three bird nest on the ground and frequent flyer points, even when they're prematurity ejected.
