Israel is possibly the most "legitimate " nation on the planet.. The British Mandate over Palestine expired in 1948, leaving the area stateless and the Leading Jewish Council proclaimed the state of Israel, with was immediately recognised by the United states.. And Ultimately the United nations.. And when you cut to the chase, it was a useless lump of desert with no formal government before that..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman ahhh there it is..the US, mother of all evils!
It’s not possible that there is bloodbath and US don’t have a role in it.

@whowasthatmaskedman Plenty of the USA (and indeed here in Australia) is a 'useless lump of desert' too

@butterflybaby75 Quite so.. In fact more than half of Oz is like Arizona and Nevada.. Ancient sea bed with no topsoil and a high salt content as well as no water. Luckily it holds almost every mineral you could want to dig up and sell, including a couple you dont, like asbestos..😷

This is one of the biggest fallacies. There was never a case of a "land with no people, waiting for a people with no land". Something as a technical-Jew, I heard and read a million times.

The land was there, and the people were there. It wasn't desert-like, although parts of it is (Negev), but other parts are hilly and lush. And most importantly, people have always lived there.

Today, Israel is on the verge of an abyss, that's going to force the emigration of all the smart people, to Europe and the Americas. The Orthodox knuckle draggers are poised to take total control. The Technion is going to give way to Rabbinical schools, and that, not anything Palestinians do, will be the demise of Israel. Much the same as if the US turns into Giliad, if the Evangelists get Trump into office for another term.

PS: racism is rampant in Israel, but it's not what's being discussed in this thread. It's Jewish Israelis massively discriminating against other Jewish Israelis. Not something you will read about it in the NYT (yet), but some of us have seen it first hand.

@Northwest I agree that the current politics of Israel is appalling. My comments were about the development and productivity of the land at the time the Nation was declared.. My own nation of Australia had a not so different situation when White settlement started. While it was occupied, and those occupied can lay claim to a long spiritual culture, they barely left a footprint on the land. These days thats considered a good thing. But at the time, "development" was the mark of civilization. The Jews bought intensive Agriculture, then exports and development to that land..😷

You're totally glossing over the context. Pre-1950s farming and post 1950s farming. The occupants of the land, were not nomads, they were farmers, traders and business people, who worked with the tools of the time.

@Northwest Its probably best for me to back away here, simply because I get bogged down in Palestines GNP at the time, plus the fact that the rest of the world was coming slowly out of the Great Depression and Palestine was not in control of its own destiny at the time. So even though the numbers support me, there is way too much mud in the water for me...So lets agree to disagree..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman You lost me at "Palestines GNP at the time". There was NO Palestine in 1948. Palestine referred to a geographical area, not an official state.

So even though the numbers support me

I would love to see what the numbers are, for a state that did not exist back in 1948, and does not even exist today.

@Northwest OK. This is me out: Just refering to Wikipedia on the economy of the region (to which I an referring, not the political entity) outlines the very difficulties I described. Not the least of which is the massive inflow of post war Jews who were responsible for the majority of the activity and growth. Its a herculian task to extract that, but one you remove that input, plus the previous British activity associated with the Iraqi oilfields, the portion provided by the Palestinian Arabs was negligable.
I wont engage further on what is really a minor point...😷
