Why is BLM (Government) rounding up wild horses

Putting them in pens, and allowing them to die? This is inhumane! Why can’t the government leave these horses to remain running free in the wild? Now they are in captivity on top of each other in horrible conditions dying of infections. You can always count on the government ... to screw things up. 🤦‍♀️ 😢

Why round them up in the first place? Are they causing damage in the wild? I don't understand the reasoning behind BLM's actions.
