I had someone tell me to get over slavery

I don't think this person meant for it to sound bad but people need to understand that so long as we support the systems that made slavery possible in the first place, we can't just get over it. Trump is actively trying to bring slavery back by approving of segregation in the military and doing things like covering slavery exhibits and trying to white wash history.

We get "over" it through installing better policies and people but we're not doing that. So no I won't get over it.

@Ferise1 Yes, slavery existed in many parts of the world, including in some African societies. But the point isn’t whether slavery existed, it’s how it was structured and justified. The U.S. system was racialized, hereditary, and tied to white supremacy, which shaped laws, economics, and culture for centuries afterward

@SatanBurger you’re blowing this out of proportion, the USA and Europe are the most progressive societies the world has ever seen
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@Ferise1 No I’m putting it in context. When we talk about white nationalism or systemic racism in the U.S., we’re talking about centuries of laws, policies, and culture that treat race as a hierarchy.

That’s not a small thing.

White nationalism still influences politics, policy, and culture. Improvement isn’t the same as resolution in regards to progressivism.

Furthermore, most of our laws aren't progressive. We don't do living wages anymore, conservatives made laws to protect teens who sxx offend, we have stricter abortion laws leading to higher all cause mortality in births and we want to roll back gay marriage.

@SatanBurger if that’s true why don’t you go back to Africa? Could it be because you love it in America?
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@SatanBurger true. Although slavery existed for centuries before Europeans (and still exists today ) our version was far different and more brutal than anything that came before or after
Ferise1 · 46-50, M
@AthrillatheHunt what makes you say it was more brutal?
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@Ferise1 bc it was . Forced breeding , being BORN a slave w no chance of freedom , etc.. most practiced forms of slavery through history was actually indentured servitude . But not in the US (at least for the African slaves )
Ferise1 · 46-50, M
@AthrillatheHunt same for all slaves
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@AthrillatheHunt From my understanding Europeans streamlined slavery. There were some things that were unique about the United States brand of slavery. This doesn't negate slavery in other cultures nor excuses it but a lot of our laws and views and power structures regarding the United States are centuries old structures built around that mentality.

That's just the surface too wait until you hear the truth about prison.
Ferise1 · 46-50, M
@SatanBurger so why don’t you go back to Africa?
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@Ferise1 let’s agree to disagree. We actually had indentured servitude here in US, but that was for Euro immigrants , mostly Irish .(and they weren’t brought over in shackles )
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@SatanBurger the Dutch turned slavery into a world wide business w help from Spain and Portugal, who needed workers in their American colonies . The Dutch have always been the non judgmental middle men (slavery drugs prostitution diamonds )

@Ferise1 I love how you try to turn it into something else other than the points made. It's sometimes easier to make it about something else rather than concede. And it says clearly on my profile where I am, the United States.
