Warsh's Stance on Interest Rates

Despite speculation that he was chosen by the administration to lower borrowing costs quickly, Warsh emphasized at the Jackson Hole economic symposium that the Fed's primary focus remains fixing inflation at its 2% target. Consumer inflation remains stubbornly elevated above the central bank's goal, leading Warsh to warn that failing to control inflation inflicts the most severe harm on everyday working Americans.

While Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has advocated for lower borrowing costs, Warsh's independent stance leaves open the possibility of keeping rates steady or even implementing rate hikes if upcoming economic data does not show core inflation moving clearly toward target levels.

Warsh has also moved away from giving explicit "forward guidance" on future rate decisions, arguing that predicting cuts or hikes too far in advance limits the central bank's flexibility.

Worried about Trump’s abysmal polling over the economy, the widely unpopular war in Iran, and the failure of Trump’s DOJ to comply with the release of the Epstein files as mandated by the Epstein Transparency Act, Trump and Bessent are pressuring Warsh for an interest rate cut before the midterms.

Warsh is believed to be opposed to such a rate cut and is focused on decreasing inflation to his 2% target.

Warsh is caught in an economic vice here. If he lowers interest rates, inflation spirals. If he raises interest rates, borrowing costs rise, including the costs of America servicing its own $40 Trillion debt and Treasury bond yields will also rise in sympathy.. Another factor to consider is corporate profits, which will evaporate if borrowing costs rise, simply because of the massive debt burdom nearly all major corporates are currently running with..😷
@whowasthatmaskedman …a true Catch 22 of Demented Donnie’s own making—or at least his extreme exacerbation. That rise in our national debt is an ***censored*** disaster and will be for years.

It will take some draconian measures to reign it in—if even can be brought in.

@KunsanVeteran and that will cost votes in the midterms and investors at home and overseas
@whowasthatmaskedman I think that the best we can hope for from Warsh is to stand pat on interest rates which won’t budge the needle on inflation.

I think the worst and most likely result will be a complete capitulation to tRUMP like all of his other appointees…
