@WalksWith Of course "everyone" is fine with this (on this MAGA-infested site anyway). It's Trump. The rules do not apply to him.
JonUK41 · 36-40, M
@WalksWith Do you have some credible source for these claims?

Firstly Saudi is not a seller of arms they're a buyer. Hard to see how they could be rewarded with a $100bn deal for something they don't make/sell.

Where's this luxury jet - any pictures of it?
iamthe99 · 36-40New
@JonUK41 Are you suggesting this story is made up...?

But anyway, here ya go.

JonUK41 · 36-40, M
@iamthe99 The jet is to be Air Force One - the President's plane not Trump's plane. Trump would only use it while he's President. He wouldn't keep it when he leaves.

The bit about the $100bn arms deal is certainly made up. Saudi Arabia does not make arms - they buy them from the USA and others

Are you saying you believe the story?
iamthe99 · 36-40New
@JonUK41 Actually he does get to keep it once he leaves office.

Saudi Arabia does not make arms - they buy them from the USA and others
which is exactly what it says in the original post re the arms deal.

The story is not made up.
JonUK41 · 36-40, M
@iamthe99 Where's your source that Trump himself - rather than the USA - get to keep it?

Then show us the details of this $100bn arms deal with the Saudis.

@oldguy73 Well, I think they need to read the emoluments clause.

The Foreign Emoluments Clause is a provision in Article I, Section 9, Clause 8 of the United States Constitution,[1] that prohibits the federal government from granting titles of nobility, and restricts members of the federal government from receiving gifts, emoluments, offices or titles from foreign states and monarchies without the consent of the United States Congress.

Also, HIGHLY relevant that ONLY Trump will be using this "gift" because, as you said, it will be donated to the Presidential Library so no future presidents can touch it...
JonUK41 · 36-40, M
@iamthe99 What benefit would Trump personally gain from it being donated to his library?
iamthe99 · 36-40New
@JonUK41 OK, we'll leave it there as you clearly see no problem with this bribe being made just days after Trump announced a $5.5 billion golf course was going to be built in Qatar (which will be run by the president's children, but no conflict of interest, surely...)

Let me just put it to you. If you claim that you would be OK with this if it was Biden, Harris, or any Democrat receiving this "gift" then I call BS :)
oldguy73 · 70-79, M
@iamthe99 true, but what does trump gain? just gets to use a plane for a few years, and no one knows, it could be used
elsewhere
iamthe99 · 36-40New
@oldguy73 I think what you need to be worried about is what does Qatar, a repressive Islamic state, gain from this.

And I put to you: If Harris had won the presidency and she received this "gift", you would be OK with it? If you claim yes, I call BS.
JonUK41 · 36-40, M
@iamthe99 Well I'm not American so no dog in the fight. I'd say it's equally fine whoever is President. Clearly the President does need a jet to do his job.

You need us tell us how Trump will gain from this plane after he leaves office. Without some benefit it's not a gift to Trump as it has no value to him.

There's still no explanation of Saudi being rewarded with a $100bn deal for a product they don't even make. Clarification of this would be interesting :)
iamthe99 · 36-40New
@JonUK41 It is Saudi BUYING the arms from the US.
JonUK41 · 36-40, M
@iamthe99 Well obviously.

So the Americans have been rewarded with the deal. Not the Saudis. No doubt US arms companies were glad of the business - making/selling arms is what they do for a living.

If I sell you a product are you rewarding me by buying from me or am I rewarding you by selling to you?
iamthe99 · 36-40New
@JonUK41 You are determined to see no wrong in Trump so we'll leave it at that. The OP's post is emotive, but its clear that the US has no intention of punishing/sanctioning the Saudi regime for the murder of Jamal Khashoggi.
JonUK41 · 36-40, M
@iamthe99 And you are determined to see wrong where none exists. You're not even able to explain what you think is wrong.

Sounds like an impasse. Enjoy the rest of your day :)
iamthe99 · 36-40New
@JonUK41 OK what is wrong is this is a direct violation of the Emoluments Clause.
JonUK41 · 36-40, M
@iamthe99 Starting with the obvious. Your gripe seems to be with Saudi but its Qatar supplying the plane. Two different countries.

The clause you reference applies to members of the government - ie the President and his underlings deriving personal benefit. Every government has a similar rule - obviously you can't bribe government officials.

All you need to do is tell us how Trump will personally benefit from this plane after he leaves office.
iamthe99 · 36-40New
@JonUK41
The clause you reference applies to members of the government - ie the President and his underlings deriving personal benefit

No it doesn't: The text says
No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State
JonUK41 · 36-40, M
@iamthe99 You've just said yourself "no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust"

This means individuals working for the government - the President on down.

If you tell us what personal benefit Trump has derived from this plane after he leaves office you'll win the argument - why not just do that?

If you want a knockout tell us how Saudi spending $100bn on US arms is a reward from the USA.
iamthe99 · 36-40New
@JonUK41 And you said "personal BENEFIT". It says nothing about BENEFIT. Only you say that. Why? There's your knockout.
JonUK41 · 36-40, M
@iamthe99 So you're admitting Trump will derive no personal benefit from this plane?

We seem to be getting somewhere.
iamthe99 · 36-40New
@JonUK41 Well he will. He, and only he, will get a brand new luxury plane for his use while in office. That seems like a benefit to me and pretty much everyone else.

Now you need to admit that this is in direct violation of the Emoluments Clause.

@WalksWith bathhouse Barry transferred over 10 billion to Iran in gold and cash in the middle of the night on unmarked aircraft.. the Iranians bought uranium from Russia. Bathhouse Barry removed restrictions on Iran to prevent developing nuclear weapons. This is the 20% of US uranium that kilary sold to russia. This is the same Iran that chants DEATH TO AMERICA
