In a direct democracy the majority would just vote to give themselves a clean environment and a fabulous social safety net

Yeah and immediately after Russia would pull an Ukraine and you'll say bye bye to direct democracy in roughly two years

US is a relublic, not a democracy

Hitler and Putin were both voted into power

There's no reason to assume any democracy, direct or otherwise, will automatically only do rational things, and will never ponderously vote for its own demise
