I Hate Guns

A chronically obese guy goes to his doctor for a routine check-up. After a thorough examination, the doctor informs him that he has high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels and type two diabetes. Fat dude ponders this for a while and then announces that he will cure all of his ailments by eating more Big Macs and drinking even more Coke. The doctor patiently puts before him evidence from all over the world that tells fatso that his strategy will result in his death. At this, lardass pounds the doctors desk, calls him a liar and ells him that his arguments lack logic. He further tells the doctor that it's his god given right to eat what he wants and as much of it as his (ridiculously strained) heart desired.

Two weeks later, the fat guy has a massive heart attack and drops down dead.

The local news station turns up at his home and interviews his grief stricken wife. She tells them what a wonderful guy he was, that he was an amazing father and husband. His mother, who was also at the house, tells them that he was a dutiful son and a credit to the family.

The TV crew then takes to the streets and starts to interview his friends and neighbours. All echo the sentiments of his widow and mother. All bemoan his sudden and tragic passing. However, one of them mentions his recent visit to the doctor.

They track down the doctor who tells them that he was morbidly obese and that he had warned him about the possibility of a heart attack. The doctor tells them about the guys test results. The doctor tells them about the research and medical facts that he showed his former patient. The doctor tells them that the recently deceased fat guy had refused to listen to his medical advice and had instead cited his “god given right to eat what he wants and as much of it as his heart desired.”

The piece was picked up, and re-broadcast, by Fox News. Hannity & co ridicule the doctor and the causal effect of bad diet and heart disease. Hannity blusters that McDonalds and Coca-Cola are much loved American institutions and that every American must defend them against leftist, liberal doctors.

America is a much larger country than all of those countries with a much much higher population. It is bound to have more crime.

@room101 It never seems to matter on here in my case if I do or not...I'll get a couple "likes" but no one ever seems to want to argue with me on here...they almost never respond back. 😒

It's rather disapointing, because I like to discuss things or at least know someone read it. Maybe I'm not pushing the right buttons or something...
room101 · 51-55, M
@Scribbles Or maybe you are pushing the right buttons and they have no comeback 👍
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@room101 I hope so 🙂

Great analogy. Unfortunately most Americans are too scared and brainwashed to do the decent thing.
On another thread, private gun ownership was likened to an arms race between private citizens. They are all too scared of each other's right to own lethal weapons to ever contemplate trying to give up their own. It must be awful to live in a country so dominated by fear and violence.

And then of course there's the fact that many people are getting extremely wealthy from this fear.
Combined with a rampant unquestioning type of nationalism.

There is a kind of radicalisation that is happening to disaffected and disenfranchised people, who are brought up to worship violence, similar to how Muslims are radicalized, that means unfortunately we are going to see many more incidents of this sort.
luckranger71 · 51-55, M
@SW-User You hit on something important: radicals on either side need and thrive off other radicals.
room101 · 51-55, M
@SW-User Thank you for your very astute words. And luckranger is right, you've hit on the very real phenomenon of radicalisation. Radicalisation driven by fear and ideology.

Funny how you uk people have all the answers on America’s problems! 😂. I own guns I’m not a nut or full of blood lust ! Remember that the next time some wacko runs over 20 people in a van and your police have to watch with there billy clubs !

@Bustoff77 @FelixLegion Typically pathetic American chest thumping responses. Clearly you 'muricans value your guns more than you value the lives of your children and your fellow citizens.

@HoraceGreenley Yeah you already said that luckranger. Repetition is sooooooo tedious.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@room101 Well the shoe fits.
room101 · 51-55, M
@HoraceGreenley do you even wear shoes? what an absolute twat. you've got nothing. you are nothing.
room101 · 51-55, M
Given the propensity of putting fiction before fact by the pro-gun nutjobs, here's a little bit of fact-based fiction for y'all.

room101 · 51-55, M
@HoraceGreenley Sure, just like the information that mass shooters only use illegally obtained weapons, that you pulled out of your arse earlier in this discussion.

Mate, every country has urban areas and every urban area has poor neighbourhoods. But, it's only America that has an average of 32,000 gun deaths every single year. Even if we pro rata the figure down to account for population size, you still have far more gun deaths than any other country in the developed world.

The fact that you, and many Americans, argue against that simple truth tells me that maybe you are a nation of homicidal maniacs after all.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@room101 Yes we are. I like it that way, because it keeps people like you away.

Stay home

@HoraceGreenley 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

I heard from My dad yesterday about some proposal by some wisconsin state Rep to allow concealed carry in private schools with the idea...that because most private schools lack a security officer on staff that the school board could pick teachers to get training and to carry a firearm while on the property and allow parents and visitors who have a CCL to carry in the schools...So "they can protect themselves and the students."

My dad supports it wholeheartedly in hopes this will become a thing for all "gun free zones" everywhere in the country and will solve the
Mass shooting problems. 😤
Anything I say falls on deaf ears.

Seriously, what is this country coming to??? Soon they may as well say that every person over the age of 18 should be carrying a gun at all times. Why do people think simply weaponizing themselves or others or even everybody makes the world safer or better?

@room101 Damn it wont let me watch your Trevor Noah video post. I LOVE Trevor Noah. Best Daily show host EVER! I'll have to go look for it on youtube in a bit. I susect I may have seen part of it already though if this was his show after the parkland shootings and how everybody, the kids, and politians are responding. He's right that the kids are acting more like adults, and the adults are acting like toddlers having a tantrum about wanting guns.
room101 · 51-55, M
@Scribbles It's a good one. Well worth a watch. We don't get his show over here so I only see it on YouTube.
berangere · 80-89, F
I sincerely hope that after the latest tragedyi Florida something will finally be done about gun ownership in America,regardless to what arguments the NRA puts forwards.The NRA thinks about the money they could lose if there was a tyter and more strict gun control in America and not about the loss of human life,it would be time people stood up to them. No, we cannot fix the gun problem with even more guns.
berangere · 80-89, F
@room101 Survivor to Rubio: Will you reject NRA money?

Listen to the way he is dodging the question.

@berangere I've seen the clip. I've tried to watch as much of the Town Hall event as possible but I have to do it in stages because, I get so pissed off at the likes of Rubio and Dana Loesch.
berangere · 80-89, F
@room101 I know,it is hard to watch.
DarkestDespair · 46-50, M
Fast food is the real problem here, and nothing is going to get better until we institute better food control laws to help people who cannot think for themselves. What really gets me going about these fast food places are the high capacity food containers. Who needs food that fast, and in such high quantities? No one, that's who. Nothing is going to get better until we can better regulate the food industry to prevent these kinds of horrific tragedies.
@DarkestDespair But you didn’t miss the other point, did you ? 😳
sighmeupforthat · 46-50, M
ah, another propagandist sheeple.
room101 · 51-55, M
@sighmeupforthat No propaganda here retard. Just basic common sense. Something that is sorely lacking in 'murica. But there's hope for you yet........from the generation that's tired of your shit

Jackaloftheazuresand · 26-30, M
I love that the title of the one graph is "Homicides per 100,000" but then the smaller side bar says "gun-related homicides."
room101 · 51-55, M
@Jackaloftheazuresand You mean "a less wary person" like the average 'murican? There is no slight of hand when it's a clear and transparent fact that countries with stringent gun ownership laws experience far less gun deaths than those without such laws.
Jackaloftheazuresand · 26-30, M
@room101 Missed it again, I don't think it's going to make another flyby for ya after this. The graph makes it look like the US has more homicide, then you toss in the narrative and voila you've got people thinking guns make more death in the US. Not guns make more gun deaths. Why do you play stupid, you think I don't know how your words are used to sell ideas?
room101 · 51-55, M
@Jackaloftheazuresand The fact remains that there are more gun deaths in America than anywhere in the developed world. Spin it how you like, those are the facts!
Scribbles · 36-40, F
Psst....Have you read this yet? https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-46473321

@Scribbles Holy crap! I've no words............😱😡
Brilliant analogy.

@bijouxbroussard Thank you.
