For those of you who call yourselves feminist... Why?

I am not speaking about the radical feminist but the one's with a genuine heart. Who truly want equal rights for men and women. Just seem to go at it in a way where they tend to ignore the negative lights of what feminism has brought. I am not speaking for first wave. Just second and third and I am only speaking for the country we currently reside in. Not those we have no control over. What's the point? Many of the serious issues we talk about for women have equal equivalent issues for men. What's the point of labeling yourself and supporting the very thing that's making things worse? Even if you have the right heart. The ones who shout and influence this country generally don't. The only way to solve that to me is by finding a word that is an example of what we are striving for. And well in my opinion what we already have. Differences will always arise unless we force those differences away or pretend they don't exist. Sexism will always be a thing until we are exactly the same. But the reason feminism was apparent was not to worry about every small difference. What's the point of calling yourself a feminist? I hope you can understand me.

I see absolutely no issues identifying myself with this:

feminism
/ˈfɛmɪnɪz(ə)m/

noun

the advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes.

@SapphicHeart: Can't argue with that. Can I. :) If a definition does it for you. I guess it depends on your preferance. I don't care much for defintions. Just the actions I see that follow it. How it is effected.
@PiceousPanda: Well, it's the meaning behind of the word. You choose for yourself if you want to add another meaning based on whatever triggers you. I am for equality and therefor do what I can to influence the parts of society I am in touch with. I do for feminism, as I do for a lot of other stuff like anti racism just to mention one other area where we still struggle a lot as society.
PiceousPanda · 26-30, F
@SapphicHeart: I don't find the definition of feminism emotional. I find the definition old. Especially for modern times. I do my best to as well to influence society but supporting feminism only causes you to support the very women who have a greater impact on society and not in any kind of good way. Plus I see women and men in a very equal light and I noticed feminism does not do such a thing. It's not equal if you believe only one can shine. I find it hypocritical and really only a taste for historical revenge.
@PiceousPanda: Seems to me you base your perception on feminism by some of the groups misusing the word. Feminism isn't about discriminating against men. That's one of the biggest prejudices made around feminism. I see no conflict against men and women as equal. I don't know if the definition is old and no longer useful for modern times. It seems to be good enough for UN, it's the same UN Women's Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson is working by and including in her speeches. To me hypocrisy is seen in a lot of discussions around feminism, but it's mostly seen among those interpreting and/or misusing/hijacking the true meaning of the word. I have to disagree with your take on it. All my best.
PiceousPanda · 26-30, F
@SapphicHeart: As I stated from my original post I am only talking about feminist like yourself who have a good heart. But I also stated that a lot of you tend to pretend the negatives aren't there and seem to refuse the idea of a gender neutral movement. I support equality amongst men and women and the improvememt of there lives. And I don't think women need organizations to do what they want.
@PiceousPanda: You're entitled to think what you want. One last remark and I believe we get no further on this subject other than agreeing to disagree. Being a feminist isn't the same as not supporting equality amongst men and women, contrary in fact.

PiceousPanda · 26-30, F
@SapphicHeart: By defintion yes. By action. Obviously not. That is why so many are getting tired of it and many people are getting rid of the label to begin with.
@PiceousPanda: You can either tear down the meaning of the word, by working against it or misuse it (I take it it's these fractions you want to align the word with, which I refuse and together with me the UN does the same), or you can choose to make practice as the word say. Your choice. End of this thread from my side. We really are just going in circles here. I once tried end the thread, I once suggested to agree to disagree. Make it what you want. You won't convince me of your misconceptions being right, merely because it's how you interpret the world. I keep acting by the word, and its true meaning. Bye.
PiceousPanda · 26-30, F
@SapphicHeart: I was a feminist a couple of years back. The meaning is about women's movement. Not men. It's hypocritical to say It's about equality whilst at the same time showing me a definition that is about women empowerment. Not men. Goodbye for now.
@PiceousPanda: I read your other contributions and they add on to see this contribution in a slightly different light. I won't disturb you anymore. All my best wishes for you in your life.

Don't understand where you're coming from but alright
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
So what problem do you have with having equal rights to men exactly. That simple definition is what feminism is period. Any thing else is what others put on it. @PiceousPanda:
PiceousPanda · 26-30, F
@JimboSaturn: The problem is you choose to pretend that feminism now is doing more good than harm. I disagree with one sided issues in any type of group. That is my stance. First wave feminism was extremely central. When second wave began a lot of women abandoned the concept because they were against making it a women's issue or focused on the women's point of view so to speak. People have a habit of using cheap tactics to get what they want. All in all it never works out completely the way it should have been. I understand It's very hard for most people to support men and women at the same time but that is the most healthiest way to go. If you do actually want a more positive change. No matter how much you stand by the defintion. Remember the defintion itself is about women not men. It has given people more of an excuse to ignore men in developed countries where women have more benefits. This is not to say I support. The men's right movement I don't at all but I'm very sick of this attitude we have now. If you want an example of a strong women who actually accomplished a lot without needing to complain about the issues women go through. Look no further than judge judy and most people assumed she wasn't a feminist. You know why? Many watched her and noticed she gave no mercy towards men or women on trial. No special attention. Because both are human beings who can be just as spiteful or just as good. True equality is understanding differences because if a man was moore weak and shorter then he'd fail at some things and if a women had strength and height. Or even just strength and she accomplished things beyond complaining and trying to make it easier for herself. That would be equality. I don't understand this. People assuming I don't want equality because I don't support feminism. I only support first wave which is long gone. I'm tired of this nonsense. This selective fake equality so to speak. I care about women just as I care about men.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
I suppose I honestly don't seem that society is biased towards women. In fact in my country (Canada) when still get paid less for doing the same jobs. I like what Hillary Clinton said "Women's rights are human rights, and human rights are women's rights"

Real feminism, not the stupid fluff or angry people is just about equality under the law for both sexes that's it!

I don't see any negative effects of women having the same opportunity as men. @PiceousPanda:
PiceousPanda · 26-30, F
@JimboSaturn: But women do have the same opportunities as men. The issue is when people complain about the results which gets me so tired and irritated with the minds of people. Like... What the hell did you expect? A 50/50 split everywhere. We act as if women don't have any opportunties. They have all the opportunities as a man! But choice is a real thing and instead of whining that women tend to choose this. Actyally worry about central issues. I understand you don't see it more than likely because you hold a biaseness for women just as most people of this world constantly seeing a add of a little girl not accomplishing her dreams because she's a girl. Farther from the truth and it makes me sad we believe in this false dilemma.
PiceousPanda · 26-30, F
@JimboSaturn: I reccomend you to do actual research on the wage gap and look at both sides. In fact just look at the facts. Check youtube and read Wage Gap debunked. Wage gap is a real thing but it's illegal and it has happened to everyone. But those people are a minority.
PiceousPanda · 26-30, F
@JimboSaturn: Both my mother and father got underpaid because of the rivalry of there nationality it held in the workplace. My mom quit and my dad stayed in his current job even though he's being ripped off.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
We have come a long way for sure, but not all the way. It is not affirmative action or a 50/50 split I that I think is fair, just no bias against women. Believe me I still see it.
In a way, I kinda see the female role models have gone backwards a bit. Woman and girls have become much more sexualized recently. And the characters I see in the media have less substance and much more sex appeal.

@PiceousPanda:
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
Yep minorities are under paid as well for sure. But Youtube is not a reliable source of information. I get my information from Statistics Canada. @PiceousPanda:
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
Statistics Canada's data is obtained by census and other information obtained by statisticians here. Youtube videos are made by people who seek to press their agenda whatever side of the political spectrum. @PiceousPanda:
PiceousPanda · 26-30, F
@JimboSaturn: Bias happens to men and women but it doesn't get rid of the fact that women can do what they want. I'm not a victim. My skin tone is not a victim and my gender isn't. I do what I want and I make the choices in my life every barrier I have in life is just that. Barriers. That everyone has. Women and men have baises against each other. 50/50 isn't fair. It's force. And truthfully that part is all on women. They chose that route and I was just born in it.
PiceousPanda · 26-30, F
@JimboSaturn: I never said the statistics weren't true. What I am saying it isn't the fault of unequal pay and that is what those videos are there to teach a lot of people and many people who are very serious in there careers do not take it seriously.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
True never be a victim, I like that. But feminist seek a meritocracy just like everyone else where opportunities are the same for men and women. @PiceousPanda:
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
I dont' understand you point. @PiceousPanda:
PiceousPanda · 26-30, F
@JimboSaturn: No they don't at all. Look at education. That faulted on men. Look at the health for men. Opportunities to gain help in situations of rape domestic violence and getting sick. Completley unfair and just getting worse because of feminism. All it does it give more opportunities for women to out do men. Feminism has encouraged the victim thought process.
