@Shattered: Executive orders can rightfully be used to reverse EOs issued by previous presidents, as Trump is doing, but they aren’t limited to that. They can and have been used by previous presidents (including Obama) to get around Congressional resistance to their initiatives. That’s also legitimate and it’s probably the most common reason for issuing them. I don’t know what Obama specifically said about his issuance of these orders, but for the purposes of this discussion, I’ll assume what you said is accurate. Worthy of criticism, perhaps, but his attitude and comments didn’t have any bearing on his right to issue the orders.
I agree that Trump will be closely watched on the EO issue and he will be challenged if there’s any perception he’s crossed the line, such as using them to reverse laws passed by Congress. Assuming Trump doesn’t cross the line, you’ll hear no criticism from me. I may not like what he’s trying to accomplish with the orders, but I won’t deny he has the legal right to issue them.
