The Story of the Two Liars

The old photographs tell a story the biography omits. Before America, before Congress, before the identity became the brand, Ilhan Omar did not wear the hijab. The religious observance arrived later, in the country whose customs it supposedly defies, and its timing is not a footnote. It is the campaign.
The accusation writes itself, and it is not really about fabric. It is about a politician who understood that oppression, real or staged, is the most valuable currency in her party's economy.
The headscarf converts a resume into a narrative: outsider, victim, voice of the silenced, all available in one accessory, worn for the cameras that reward it.
Voters are entitled to ask which parts of a public identity are devotion and which are deployment. Omar's constituents in Minneapolis did not elect a costume. They elected a representative, and the difference between a faith and a flag is whether it survives the moment it stops paying. The photographs suggest the answer arrived before the politics did.
If the observance is sincere, it costs nothing to say when it began. Silence on that question is itself an answer.
