Reform UK - are we REALLY surprised?

First of all, credit where it’s due. ITV News deserves huge recognition for its Exposure investigation into racism and misogyny within Reform UK. Undercover investigative journalism takes hard work, and exposing this behaviour with evidence is exactly why a free press matters.

But honestly, are we REALLY surprised?

A party founded by Nigel Farage, whose politics have repeatedly been criticised for stoking hostility towards immigrants and minorities, attracting people expressing racist and misogynistic views? Who’d have thought it?!

And here’s the question I want to ask: If you knowingly vote for a party whose representatives are exposed expressing racist and misogynistic views, what does that say about YOU?

I think we’re all tired of the denials. The excuses. The endless attempts to disguise prejudice as patriotism.

You can tell us you aren’t racist. You can tell us you just want to control immigration, protect British culture or put Britain first. But at some point, we have to stop listening to the excuses and start looking at the evidence.

Of course, not every Reform voter necessarily shares every abhorrent view expressed by the party’s members. But if you know what you’re supporting, see the evidence, and vote for them anyway, you need to ask yourself some serious questions.

Patriotism is not a free pass for bigotry. And wrapping prejudice in a Union Jack doesn’t magically make it acceptable.

Well done to ITV News for doing the investigative journalism that politicians and their supporters would often rather we didn’t see.

Watch the report. Examine the evidence. Make up your own mind.

But please, let’s stop pretending we don’t know what’s going on.

I never intended on voting for Reform so I’ll not waste my time with this dreariness.

But I expect a great many disgusting peasants from the Wetherspoons crowd will vote for them. So there’s a good chance they’ll be on government soon.

@Waveney Buckle yourself in. Hold on tight to that beverage. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.

@AdmiralPrune There will be another referendum I am certain, but only when public opinion is so solid for rejoining that it will merely be rubber-stamping the public's will. Reassurances that we won't have to adopt the Euro will help immeasurably.

But it will be a while. We can't have another referendum like the last one.

@Waveney Referenda over difficult multi-faceted subjects, are probably the ridiculous tools to use in representative liberal democracies. So I hope the UK doesn't organise a new one.
