British politics lines up for a coalition in 2030

Labour/Liberal with the possibility of rejoining the EU. Public ownership of water. Some attempt at dealing with the care crisis.

Conservative/Reform No more illegal immigration. Radically reduced benefits system.Great Britain is best alone.
Stimulating the economy by growth.

Very different futures lie ahead.

My worry is that 45% will not vote. And we will just drift along with no vision

The country is already in terminal decline having Labour in power will only accelerate the inevitable.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@Nimbus In what ways?
Strictmichael75 · 61-69, M
The Uk will never get back into the EU!
A lot of member countries will vote against it and rightly so
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@Strictmichael75
to get back in the UK needs an unanimous vote

I assume you mean by the existing states. Certainly the UK was not unanimous in its decision to leave.
Strictmichael75 · 61-69, M
@FreddieUK the UK voted to leave but to get back in it needs all the EU states to accept it and that won’t happen
peterlee · M
@Strictmichael75 Which countries do you think will block us?

We know Poland, France and Spain would actively welcome us.

And the Baltic states rely on our defence.
SunshineGirl · 41-45, F
Growing the economy counts for nothing unless its fruits are more widely distributed. That is why I don't think Conservative/Reform is a natural alliance given the former's record on austerity.

Those who do not bother to vote are not entitled to complain after the event.
peterlee · M
@SunshineGirl A different world when Osborne overdid austerity. Cameron was not completely trusted then. And when he got a majority, he stupidly gave us the vote to leave the EU. Even Thatcher was not that naive.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
You haven’t mentioned electoral reform.

No party is in favour of illegal immigration, so that’s not unique to the right wing no matter how much they try to claim it for themselves.

I’m not convinced we will rejoin the EU in my lifetime, whoever’s in control. A generation needs to pass. I hope we can get better trade agreements though
peterlee · M
@Picklebobble2 And the people who must engage in this are those in their thirties and forties. Not voting, and letting things drift is not the answer.
Picklebobble2 · 61-69, M
@peterlee But they need to see where proposals are going or likely to end up in order to make that decision.

And when you have Farage screaming at you to fear everything and making a mess at local council level.
Or Badenoch just spewing the same old 'it's the people who wouldn't vote for us anyway'
Or Burnham who can't get sufficient support from his OWN backbenchers and is running everywhere like a headless chicken while proposing nothing of real substance to suggest change is likely in however many Parliaments he wants to count, you can see why younger people would prefer to publicly protest.

I mean at least they would feel justified in doing so wouldn't they ?
peterlee · M
@Picklebobble2 This affects their future though.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
All parties betray most of their manifesto anyway.
No matter which party you vote for they all lie to gain power.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@SunshineGirl Agreed. However i never mentioned 'ammending' anything. I said they often know they are outright lying when they make up/publish their manifesto.
Politicians exist in order to decieve the public..to lie and distract from real problems.
.
SunshineGirl · 41-45, F
@Entwistle Is there any example of this in the current administration's msnifesto? From memory, both Labour and Conservative 2024 manifestos were remarkanle mainly for the lack of concrete pledges.

If politicians are at fault at all, it is for not having the moral courage to deliver hard truths to their electorates . . such as world class services cannot be funded through American level rates of taxation.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@SunshineGirl That's my point. They bullshit all the time.
A lack of concrete pledges..hence lies,half truthes and downright lies.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
Generally speaking the electorate are stupid and politicians know this..in fact they rely on it.
Thinkerbell · 46-50, F
@Entwistle

True enough, but what was it Churchill once said about democracy...? 🤔
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@Thinkerbell 'The best argument against democracy is a 5 minute chat with a voter'...or something along those lines.
Thinkerbell · 46-50, F
@Entwistle

Yes, that may be the best argument against democracy, but Churchill quoted a stronger one in its favor.

"It has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."
