Fact-Checking Trump’s Speech at the United Nations
President Trump praised his own domestic and foreign policy accomplishments in a speech Tuesday morning before the United Nations General Assembly, repeatedly making remarks rife with falsehoods and exaggerations.
Here’s a fact-check.
What Was Said
“When you add the United States and Venezuela together, we have more than 60 percent of the oil in the world.”
This is exaggerated. Mr. Trump, heralding a deal he struck with Venezuela that allowed the United States to take control of a significant portion of its oil, overstated the scale of that agreement.
Mr. Trump has said that Venezuela will give the United States more than 65 billion barrels of its proven oil reserves based on geological and engineering data. Venezuela has about 303 billion barrels in proven oil reserves, while the United States has about 46 billion barrels, according to the Energy Information Administration. Together, that is about 22 percent of the nearly 1.6 trillion barrels of global reserves.
Currently, the United States produces about 23.6 million barrels daily and Venezuela about 1 million a day. Together, that is about 23 percent of the 106 million barrels produced worldwide.
What Was Said
“A few weeks later, we ended the war in Gaza, saving untold thousands of lives.”
This is exaggerated. Mr. Trump helped broker a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war in October 2025. While much of the large-scale fighting has stopped, Israel still conducts military operations and strikes regularly in Gaza and the death toll continues to climb. The Gaza health ministry has reported that Israel’s military has killed more than 1,000 Palestinians since October, including both Hamas officials and civilians.
Elements of Mr. Trump’s peace plan remain stalled. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel in August rejected a 15-point plan backed by the Trump administration for disarming Hamas. Later that month, one of Mr. Trump’s own officials on his Board of Peace accused the Israeli government of jeopardizing the cease-fire, noting that ongoing strikes in Gaza undermined the plan.
What Was Said
“The United States has carried out dozens of strikes on cartel drug boats, destroying 97 percent of the drugs coming into the ocean and sea. You’ve seen it; they disappear very quickly, and we’re down 90 percent. They’re down 97 percent.”
This lacks evidence. For months, Mr. Trump has claimed a decimation of maritime drug trafficking as an achievement of unauthorized boat strikes in the waters off Central and South America that began last September. But that claim is unsupported, unlikely and disputed by his own administration.
The White House previously cited a record amount of drugs seized in July 2025 and a low amount seized in December by one branch of Customs and Border Protection as evidence of Mr. Trump’s claims. But the bulk of the drugs seized was marijuana (Venezuela is a transit hub for cocaine) and it is unclear where those seizures took place. Moreover, C.B.P. is not the only agency that seizes drugs.
Criminologists who focus on the region have said that the strikes most likely disrupted some drug routes but the campaign had not halted trafficking altogether. Rather, traffickers have been forced to find new routes. The Washington Post also reported in July that an internal assessment from the Drug Enforcement Administration “found the strikes had failed to affect the supply or price of cocaine in the United States and had led traffickers to diversify beyond go-fast boats and to avoid international waters.”

The president repeated a number of claims that The New York Times has previously fact-checked:
He falsely claimed to have ushered in $21 trillion in foreign investments. (This is almost double the White House’s own tally, which includes broad pledges and previously announced investments.)
He falsely claimed to have signed the largest tax cuts in American history. (The tax cuts signed into law last summer rank sixth.)
He claimed that there are “more Americans working today by far than ever before.” (This is a meaningless statistic, given population growth. The unemployment rate in August was currently a low 4.1 percent, which is slightly higher than in January 2025, when he took office.)
He misleadingly said that “we have more munitions than we could ever possibly even think of using, and we’re building them at levels that we have never done before.” (The Iran war has drained the United States’ arsenal of munitions.)
He overstated credit for settling eight wars. (It is an exaggeration to call some of the conflicts “wars,” and some countries dispute Mr. Trump’s role in others).
