This is what happens when you don't hold news media to account.
It enables fearmongers to set the agenda and then agitators promote lies as facts.

A 90% drop in violent crime in 3 decades is highly commendable. What’s the secret ?
Waveney · M
@AthrillatheHunt the secret? Myriad reasons.
People spending longer in education, CCTV, better security for cars and homes, people staying home and playing video games where you can enact crime sprees rather than committing them in the real world. Also probably the banning of brain harming lead in petrol as well.
But probably most importantly, our ban on handguns in 1996, which oddly enough happened at almost exactly the time violent crime started to drop

Is rape included in those stats? I heard its gone up. At least on public transport
Waveney · M
@Jm31xxx Exactly. You "heard" it's gone up. But it hasn't.
The trouble is that we in the UK fixate on sporadic horrific cases, thanks to our scabrously lying, vote-seeking politicians and timorous governments not daring to challenge crime untruths, while we have a hostile media bent on terrifying the living daylights out of everyone.

I think it may have something to do with social media.
Crimes, real and perceived, are shared far and wide. Constant criticism of the police, rightly or wrongly, probably adds to the misconception thst crime figures are rising.
Add to that crime being politicised, and it's no wonder people think there's so much of it.

Well... Maybe on papers only...
