Why America’s National Anthem Feels So Different to Europeans.

[media=https://youtu.be/VzODg0JtDxY]

The British guy is commenting about Americans and the World Cup:

"The national anthem of the United States, "The Star-Spangled Banner", symbolizes national unity, perseverance and freedom... And it's not just for this event. They do this all year round. Every day. So when you come home from America and you take down your flag, remember: they're not taking down theirs."

I think my natural scepticism kicked in after "An armed society is a polite society" 😬

Our country contains many different nations, many different flags. What this gentleman seems to desire is one particular flag to be prioritised above all others. There is no lack of exposure for this flag, it flaps from many lamp posts and has been graffiteed onto myriad public furniture, often with the express intention of intimidating people within their own communities. The political party that the speaker represents (the waistcoat is a giveaway) would like only one flag to be flown from public buildings. Which seems to directly contradicy the message of the video.

Symbols and songs are great, but true patriotism and national pride runs deeper and more authentic than a transient and ridiculously over-priced sports contest.

I'll tell you why I don't like the national USA anthem. It has nothing to do with the flag nor the patriotism.

I'm proud of certain things about my country. Yet the moment you stick ugly religion into the national anthem, you do a gravios misrepresention of the country.

@beckyromero Not the issue about patriotism.

I'm solely referring to the crowd that your current British commentator talking about.

That is how religion is pushed. Massive crowds. It has a hypnotic effect.

Of course, rugged individualism. If you're going to live free you have to want be free not dependent on daddy government for hand outs. When you grow up and get a job and leave your parents home. You move out and away from their authority and you depend on yourself. Socialism like in Europe perverts the whole idea of that. You're not free you're dependents of the nanny state. That state tells you what to do and how to live. Eventually it tells you if you're going to live at all.
