Chicago Mayor Criticized Over ‘Transfemicide State of Emergency’ After Deadly Weekend Violence
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) is advancing a new framework aimed at expanding city support systems for trans-identifying residents, a move that has drawn sharp political reaction online after its release came days after a violent Juneteenth weekend in the city.
The plan extends work tied to Johnson’s 2024 declaration of a “Transfemicide State of Emergency” and was developed through community engagement sessions, surveys, and input gathered by a city working group focused on “trans” residents.
City officials describe the effort as an attempt to connect services across housing, health care, employment, and public safety agencies while addressing barriers reported by LGBT Chicagoans.
In unveiling the framework, Johnson framed the effort as part of a broader push to strengthen belonging and access across the city.
“Every Chicagoan deserves to feel safe, valued, and like they belong in the city they call home,” Johnson said, adding that the initiative builds on work since the emergency declaration and aims to strengthen to build a more connected urban environment.
Making people feel safe, valued and like they belong in the city where they spend most of their time is an outlandish concept to conservatives? 🤔 I guess that explains why they try so hard to make everyone just as miserable at they are. 🤷
