A few weeks ago my 9yo son asked me if the USA had ever lost a war. I made qualification that the end result being losing a bunch of money and lives without making the world a safer place means “losing”. I gave him a few examples, Vietnam, Iraq, & Afghanistan. Today I have another example to tell him.
I see no positive outcome for the USA here - NONE.

@DeWayfarer war of 1812 is considered another loss.

@trollslayer Yeah, but I do believe North Korea is still a far bigger threat to the world today. 😞
That really should have been resolved in 1953. Before USA Vietnam involvement in 1954. Yeah there was the China issue, yet they at the time weren't as big a threat as they are now today.
As well only increased China's power leading into Vietnam. China didn't have nuclear weapons until 1964.

I wonder the international legal position of any one country blocking the Hormuz Strait, but particularly one of its coastal countries. All the Eastern coast is Iranian, but none of its Western coast is. What is the legal status of such a narrow water-way by territorial-waters?
2) It hardly needed the US Intelligence Services to conclude Iran can obstruct the Strait whenever it feels like it. That possibility must have been obvious all along.
4) Why did the US Government not realise they would? The Iranian government, like other tightly-organised dictatorships, is designed for continuity irrespective of the individuals; and there are no other Iranians to step in.
Also, the US government has more or less admitted the present "deal" - a term also associated with property-speculators and second-hand car salesmen - is not a completion but a stage.

@DeWayfarer Thank you that explanation.
It's clear the blockade is illegal but whether anyone can really act in any legal way is a lot less clear. Likely the Arabian states would need initiate legal cases. Or perhaps shipping lines and their insurers working together.
I know Iran blocked the Strait first - the US tried to blockade Iranian ports. There are not only oil-tankers trapped there, too. Most are container-ships.

@ArishMell Exactly and on both sides of the strait.
To my knowledge there is still a German fleet of ships waiting to get in.

Maybe he should threaten to take away their iPad and TV privileges. Perhaps they will give him the thrill of calling him, "daddy," like the NATO guy... and Todd Blanche... and possibly Boy-Lindsey Graham.
