I don't get why people can't discuss politics without resorting to being jerks?

We can just agree to disagree and still get along, right?

Yeah. That's why I usually refrain from discussing it with people who are passionate about their views, at least when I know they won't agree with me no matter what. It's a waste of time and energy when someone is simply going to continue viewing things their way and end the conversation by being a jerk
