Father of Seven Killed on Bronx Bus After Argument Over Cellphone Volume

A 41-year-old Bronx man was shot and killed on a city bus Monday afternoon during a dispute involving a cellphone conversation, police said.

Jonathan Pettigrew, a father of seven, was pronounced dead at Jacobi Medical Center after being shot during an encounter aboard a BX36 city bus Monday afternoon.

What police describe as a fast-moving dispute inside the vehicle has since turned into an active investigation, with detectives searching for a 15-year-old suspect who fled the scene moments after the shooting.

For his family, the aftermath arrived before the details fully made sense.

“They told me my brother was deceased, and I didn’t believe it,” said his brother, Avery Pettigrew, recalling the moment the family learned what had happened.

He said Jonathan had just finished work and was on his way to pick up his young daughter when the shooting occurred, a routine that had defined much of his daily life, according to News 12.

Avery described his brother as steady, hardworking, and focused on his children, saying Jonathan’s life revolved around providing stability for them.

Family members told WABC that he had been working regular hours at a restaurant and was actively involved in raising his daughter, balancing work schedules with custody arrangements and school routines.

By the time investigators began piecing together the sequence of events, much of it had already been captured in fragments—footage, witness accounts, and brief, chaotic moments remembered differently by those on board.

Video obtained by local outlets shows passengers suddenly rushing toward the bus exits, spilling into the street as confusion takes hold.

In another clip reviewed by investigators, Pettigrew can be seen stumbling out of the vehicle after being struck before collapsing on the sidewalk as bystanders react in shock and emergency calls are made.

That collapse marked the end of a confrontation that police say escalated in seconds inside the bus.

According to investigators, the dispute began when Pettigrew encountered another passenger speaking loudly on a cellphone.

He reportedly asked the individual to lower his voice.

What followed, police say, was a verbal exchange that quickly intensified inside the crowded BX36 bus as it traveled through the Bronx.

The situation escalated near East Tremont Avenue and White Plains Road, where authorities say a single shot was fired inside the bus. Passengers immediately began fleeing the vehicle as panic spread through the interior.

Emergency responders arrived shortly after and transported Pettigrew to Jacobi Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Officials confirmed the suspect had already fled the area before police secured the scene.
