Colorado Democrats Turn on Jared Polis After Explosive Tina Peters Decision Sparks Party Revolt

Colorado Democrats delivered a stunning rebuke to one of their own Wednesday night as party officials overwhelmingly voted to formally censure Democratic Gov. Jared Polis over his controversial decision to reduce the prison sentence of former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, setting off escalating fallout across Colorado politics.

The Colorado Democratic Party’s State Central Committee approved the measure with nearly 90 percent support, a striking move against a governor who has served as one of the party’s most prominent figures for years.

The disciplinary action sidelines Polis from high-profile roles at official Democratic Party functions, preventing him from appearing in ceremonial capacities at events including DemFest and the Obama Gala, the Colorado Sun reported.

Criticism intensified after Polis announced last week that he would use his clemency authority to reduce Peters’ nearly nine-year prison sentence by half and allow her release on parole beginning June 1.

Peters, the former Mesa County clerk, was convicted in 2024 on multiple felony charges tied to unauthorized access to election equipment during efforts connected to claims surrounding the 2020 election.
