I think a large number of that 400 are sitting on majorities of under 1000 particularly the new 2024 intake and generally with either Reform or Tory just behind and are desperate to hang on to their parliamentary seats in 2029 or before, come the General Election. The ones with rural seats don't stand a chance of hanging om whoever leads them after the farm tax! But hanging on to seats is why many now want to change from Starmer.
Is it only me that thinks the standard of politicians across the political spectrum has declined since the 1970s?

@gandalf1957 I think he was actually right.
The thrust must surely be to get people in work and let the economy grow. Encourage entrepreneurship.
That then raises the standard of living of all of us.

@peterlee Music to my ears. We have a progressive income tax regime, which shifts the greatest burden onto those with the broadest shoulders. We could shift the focus of our property taxes to those who own property assets, as opposed to those who use them. We should move away from regressively taxing goods and services at a flat rate as this impacts the poorest the most and suppresses economic activity. Unfortunately the Labour government narrowly defined "taxes on working people" and made it politically impossible to increase income tax responsibly and fairly (ie. not by freezing the thresholds).

@gandalf1957 Employers NI is an unhelpful tax on job creation (personal NI, by contrast, is simply a supplement to the income tax that politicians are scared of raising). I am all in favour of abolishing it. But minimum wage and business rates must remain . . the state subsidises low wage employment through the benefit system which is inefficient and serves no one in the long term.

maybe an end to all conflict falls within the change and end chaos promises too ??
As for Rachel Reeves if Starmer goes i would have thought foregone conclusion she is at the least moved but probably gone too.

@gandalf1957 A blessing to all of us.
Rayner, Streeting, Thornbury and Burnham have talent. There must be others in the four hundred Labour MPs in the Commons

Sadly, the chaos has begun and the media certainly won’t stop. Listening to the BBC interviews this morning, they are like dogs with a rat in their mouths.

@peterlee
That implies that you have spotted some.
Where ?
Starmer has had two years to scout the talent in the new intake. He failed to do that.

After redrawing the boundaries, I am in a constituency which half in one county and half in another.
When asked to help with something, the MP has to relate to two different local authorities.
It was much simpler when the constituency area and the local authority area were the same [or possibly almost the same].
