Is there a good way to step away from an online political argument?

I've noticed that even after trying to wrap things up, like summarizing my point or saying "I'll leave it there", the conversation often keeps going. The thread keeps extending and it feels hard to actually bring things to a close.

I know that some people avoid online arguments altogether, but I do end up engaging sometimes.

So I'm curious: once you're already in it, is there a way to exit the conversation more cleanly, or does it basically come down to stepping away and letting the other person have the last word?

i've only ever had political debates with americans...i find it kinda strange i've never had debates with any other user on here from any other country...i've been told i'm not allowed to have an opinion so i don't really engage any longer...it's that easy.
@beermeplease Not allowed why?
@SinlessOnslaught i got the "mind your own business, you're not american" quite often. i once had an opinion on the types of firearms that can be bought in america and i was swiftly told not to mess with the constitution...my opinion had nothing to do with the constitution
@beermeplease Americans are happy to bomb other countries and interrupt global peace and trade deals but God forbid anyone outside have an opinion on any of it.
@SinlessOnslaught it's sad...because i truly like the american people and i've been to many states and have had many positive and friendly experiences with every single american i met

@SinlessOnslaught that is the mindless kind of statement that causes arguments. I was going to address the question but that just pissed me off. Now you are on watch for a block list.
@beermeplease At least someone did lol
@Gibbon You piss me off too.
