Is there a good way to step away from an online political argument?

I've noticed that even after trying to wrap things up, like summarizing my point or saying "I'll leave it there", the conversation often keeps going. The thread keeps extending and it feels hard to actually bring things to a close.

I know that some people avoid online arguments altogether, but I do end up engaging sometimes.

So I'm curious: once you're already in it, is there a way to exit the conversation more cleanly, or does it basically come down to stepping away and letting the other person have the last word?

Every post on politics should be clearly laid out thoughts on how a person feels on a subject, and even with a suggestion of what they feel would make policy better. The worst of discussions on politics is back and forth talking points without any acknowledgment on both sides having flaws.

Because the maga people don't care if they lie.

I think either fully engage in the topic or do not engage. My mom does this short little summary of her position, but she does not like to be asked questions or listen much to other sides. Either you care enough about a topic to engage in discussion or leave it off completely. The lack of level head discussion is a bigger problem in our politics than disagreement on policy itself.
@texasgamblerguy I feel like I've fully engaged after responding over several days. After that, it usually becomes redundant.

@SinlessOnslaught Several days is over-engaging. 😸

Most arguments with people tend to end with them wanting the last word. They need to feel like they won.

@SinlessOnslaught yeah it's always gonna come down to the last word.

Make your final point and end it with, "I'll give you the last word."

And then, no matter what they say, stay quiet. Don't even acknowledge their last word.
I've been in that situation often. Yes it seems the best way is to step away. But what's better is to pick and choose your battles. When you realize ahead of time if the conversation will be fruitful or not then you'll have a better time of it. Remember you're not going to change everybody's mind.
The other person never concedes a point and always wants the last word. Congrats if you have a political conversation that ends differently. I can’t remember the last time the other person was polite. For these reasons, I try to avoid wading into political waters.
i've only ever had political debates with americans...i find it kinda strange i've never had debates with any other user on here from any other country...i've been told i'm not allowed to have an opinion so i don't really engage any longer...it's that easy.
@beermeplease At least someone did lol
@Gibbon You piss me off too.

Yes it 100% comes down to letting the other person have the last word, if you mean online. Many of the types of people who argue about politics online have nothing to do and nowhere to go, they can argue for a week, with sleeping breaks, if you let them. Besides, having the last word doesn't win the argument, it just makes them look stupid. You look much smarter when you don't reply to stupid people.
