Mamdani Looking Into Whether He Can Tax Residents Of Other Cities

As part of his ongoing plan to implement his sweeping socialist policies throughout New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani was reportedly looking into whether he can tax residents of other cities as well.

After imposing heavy taxes on New Yorkers to fund his agenda for the city, Mamdani met with his staff to determine the legality of raising taxes on residents of surrounding cities to make up for the hundreds of billions of dollars his plans were sure to cost.

"There's got to be a way for us to get more people's money," Mamdani told his aides. "We're making good progress on squeezing people dry here in this city, but that's not going to be nearly enough to pay for all of our proposed initiatives. So, let's look into what we can do about imposing crushing taxes on everyone else who doesn't live in New York City. Yeah?"

Sources within the mayor's office praised the ambitious plan. "This is socialism at its finest," one insider said. "You make insane promises for free stuff while campaigning, tax people into poverty to pay for a small fraction of those promises, and then look for ways to spread the economic destruction outside your own area. It's beautiful. Soon, it won't just be New Yorkers who can't afford to eat or pay their rent. We'll lay the groundwork to make it happen across America."

At publishing time, Mamdani had assured New Yorkers that everything in their lives would soon be free as soon as he figured out a way for it to be paid for by someone else.

As of April 17, 2026, Mayor Zohran Mamdani hasnot enacted a general property tax increase, though he previously proposed a 9.5% hike as leverage to pressure the state to tax the wealthy. He recently secured a deal with Governor Kathy Hochul to implement a "pied-à-terre" tax on second homes worth over $5 million owned by non-residents

In February 2026, Mamdani proposed a 9.5% property tax increase as a "last resort" to close a $5.4 billion budget gap if the state did not approve his preferred wealth taxes

As of April 17, 2026,none of Mayor Zohran Mamdani's primary tax proposals have officially become law. While he has reached a high-profile agreement with Governor Kathy Hochul on a "pied-à-terre" tax, it currently remains a proposal awaiting legislative approval

Tax the empty penthouses and fix the subways. Personally, I don't find that pied-à-terre tax objectionable. Do you?

And, to the extent that it puts unoccupied real estate onto the market, it might even be a good thing for the wealthy who actually live in NYC.

@ElwoodBlues

I find any taxes unreasonable

Reduce spending
Fair taxation ... flat tax on everybody
Socialism doesn't work
@pdockal On the contrary, socialism seems to work quite well in the Nordic countries.

And "socialized medicine" in every other developed country yields years longer life expectancies at roughly HALF the cost of US privatized medicine.

Yes I'm totally opposed to taking my money to support those who choose not to support themselves

I bet a flat tax and giving people skills and requiring then to use those skills will go along way
